Finding A Software Development Job

I hope this is the correct place to ask; but I'm an American who wants to live in Ireland. I've heard the economy isn't so hot right now, is this still something people are able to do?

If so, are there particular companies that are more friendly (IE - should I try applying at US companies who have offices in Dublin? ) or does it not matter? Are there any tips or things that are done differently that I should know about.

Are people generally friendly/welcoming to foreign workers or is there a sense of 'They are stealing our jobs'/hostility?

The Irish are notorious for complaining about 'people stealing their jobs' (hence the reason there was about 100,000 people on the jobless register during the height of the boom when we were at 'full employment':D)

There is a shortage of skilled professional computer science and IT people in this country (I know of recent cases where people have been employed from the Netherlands for a java standards job) and each week companies are giving out about lack of good qualified people; The chief of Norkom was on a political tv program venting his frustration at having no locally available staff stating they had to go to Poland etc to find good people. He and others have cited the problem stemming from parents forcing their children away from IT/Computer careers based on the likes of Dell pulling production away from Ireland.

So the short answer is; come on over, the more the merrier. Also if you want a more complete experience of Ireland don't confine yourself to FDI's.

Have a look at http://www.computerjobs.ie/ for starters

To be fair, it'd be hard to find a country where they didn't complain about this!
