iphone 4 and macbook pro sync problem

    i have an apple iphone 4 and a macbook pro
    i have always synced iphone on this laptop with no problems
    and now for some strange reason wen i sync all my contacts erased
    when i check my address book on macbook it is always empty
    even tried adding a single contact and sync again but still continues to erase from iphone

    also when i open address book it is entirely empty
    but if i do a spotlight search we say for robert it finds it and says it is in address book clicked on icon were it says robert and still empty
    if i hover cursor over the name the number appears briefly for 4-5 seconds

    so all my contacts is still on laptop but like on a ghost drive
    is there anyway i can find all these together and send to address book

    i had input all contacts one by one
    now i am afraid to connect iphone to laptop incase it happens again on me

    can anyone help me out please
