iPhone 5 and iTunes in the Cloud.

There are many rumours going around about the next iPhone, and iTunes finally making into the Cloud this year.

Rumours suggest that the iPhone 5 will be getting a bigger screen, A5 processor and a total redesign. I reckon the bigger screen is a sure thing, even though not many would agree as it would mean developers would have to alter their Apps. But a bigger screen is well overdue, and they will have to increase the size of the screen eventually. With the increasing competition from HTC, Motorola and other Android manufacturers Apple really need to up their game again. With manufacturers churning out better and better Android devices every few months I think the era of .5 updates (ie 3G to 3GS) is over.

The Financial Times have also reported that Apples acquisition of LaLa will be used to bring your iTunes library into the Cloud, and not for a subscription music service. The service will be used to store your library of music on the Apple servers. This makes sense as Apple's business model for iTunes was always the 99c per-song you own. Why bother going down the subscription route when you have the likes of Spotify, We7, Rdio and even Eircom offering the same service available on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad?

Just to clarify. Any speculation on future iPhone models or Apple software updates are just that, speculation! Rumours! Gossip! Fantasies!

One thing is a cert. The iPhone 5 will be announced at the WWDC 2011 in the first week in June. It will then go on sale in Ireland at the end of July or early August.

I personally don't think it needs a bigger screen. It needs to be slimmer, do away with "antenna-gate" and lead the way with NFC. Also tighter integration with the iPad will be key. I don't see Android doing that much more than Apple is doing, only releasing a phone a week into a fragmented, virus prone OS. HTC for one is dreaming beyond what technology is currently available i.e. HTC Desire HD battery lasting a little over 12 hours during normal use!

Apple have a release schedule that seems to be one release per year in the summer. Apple have scheduled a conference in June so they are expected to release the iPhone 5 then.

antenna gate was and always will be an non issue. it was an extreme case of hyperbole purely because of apple haters will hate.

i've just read that windows 7 phone doesn't have copy and paste. no one ever uses that as a reason not to get windows 7 phone, yet when the iphone didn't have copy and paste, everyone hated on iphone because of it.

with regards to iphone 5 and iOS 5, i'd like to see:

    more tweaks to the UI
    > 12 apps in a folder
    folders in folders
    faster folder opening times
    better more user-friendly notifications
more customisation of hardware (think mute/orientation switch on iPad)
syncing with iTunes over wifi would great and do away with cables that Jobs hate
an alu back (will not happen due to cellular radio)
a chrome to phone clone (it's so handy)
app store that doesn't boot you out when you install/update and app i want to keep browsing the store like the iTunes music store app.

I'd like to see nearly all of these too. ESPECIALLY the app store one.

an alu back (will not happen due to cellular radio)

The first generation iPhone had an partial aluminium back, and there is a rumour that alu will make a return on the iPhone 5, with the antenna placed under the Apple logo, which will presumably use a non-conductive material to isolate the antenna.

I can't see Apple doing this with Aluminium. That Liquid Metal technology they licensed doesn't block the radio signals, and is very light and sturdy. I could see Apple using that as the back for the iPhone 5 if they wanted to move away from the glass back of the iPhone 4.

Its not a non-issue. I receive a weak 3G signal inside my house and if I hold the iPhone it drops to non 3G coverage. And that's with a case on..

If you have a weak 3G signal somewhere, then picking up (and therefore partially covering) any phone will cause a drop in signal strength and, if the 3G signal drops below the usable threshold, any phone will revert to 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE).

The antennagate issue means that not having a cover on an iPhone 4 might mean that the signal is degraded more than other phones or a covered iPhone 4, but if the 3G signal is only just above usable levels, picking any handset up will cause the handset to drop to 2G, whether your hand can touch the antenna or not.
