There is not definitive answer because both cars have their merits.

    Stig comparison

That's because different engines are better for different applications! For starters, drive both to see which you prefer. Then calculate the relative costs for you of petrol vs diesel. Bear in mind that modern diesels don't like only being used around town at low revs.

Thanks folks, ill be using it during the day quite a bit, im in Cork but i plan on getting away in it during the weekends too. I just cant decide which will be better.

Is it true that diesel are better for stop starting as the engine warms up quicker in a diesel ?

Diesel really is best for long journeys and petrol is better for city driving.
Of course there are variations but that's my opinion.

Everyone wants to cut down on fuel spending.

What you need to do is to select two cars you would buy then calculate the fuel cost for each in a city environment.

    Look at sites like http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/petrol-vs-diesel/
    and http://www.mpgomatic.com/Volkswagen_mileage.html

Thanks so much, ive lots of homework to do so before i buy. Im not the most decisive person on the planet and every time i hear something different i change my mind lol, so its a nightmare trying to make my mind up. Ill check those sites out :)
