International reaction-the Chinese are watching!

As a true Irish person, and therefore obsessed with what everyone else thinks of us (:p)I've been hopping around the international news channels for the day, just to gauge any foreign reaction to the election. As expected, those feckin Libyans upstaged us (baxtards!), but there's been fairly standard reports on the English channels, France24 and that crazy Russian channel with the Borg-like graphics. I said I'd have a glance at the ominously (or aptly) titled Chinese News channel, CCTV. I wasn't expecting even the most cursory of mentions, so imagine my surprise when they devoted more time to the Irish election than any other channel. They even had an analysis from an academic in Chinese university, and then discussed what it meant for Sino-Irish relations. Apparently the boffin saw plenty of potential for further economic co-operation between the two countries.

Needless to say I was a tad surprised they even noticed us, let alone devoted so much time to discussing events here. It struck me as particularly strange considering the amount of attention that America pays to anything that happens outside her borders, let alone the happenings in relatively insignificant nations. I think it says a lot about China's rise, and her sense of place in the world. China wants a greater place in the international scene, and I think such interest in Irish affairs illustrates this. It's definitely a change from the American model.

Anyhoo, that's what the international media are looking at things.

I was half expecting them to mention that! Would have been funny if they had tried an Irish accent. Although it was bad enough watching the presenter struggle with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael!

China should be interested as they borrowed and adopted some of the economic ideas from Ireland... and there are many Chinese in Ireland.

I'm surprised in a way they're showing anything given the level of censorship there in recent days, such as recent uprisings.

Although the Economist, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNN and BBC News have been following the election campaign for quite a while now.

Guh ? American news barely even registers that a world exists outside the US unless it involved their troops going in somewhere!

    Remember Sky News Ireland?

Its quite possible that you were looking at a news feed that was either tailored for Ireland or Ireland and the UK. Its quite possible it wasn't available in China.

That said, they are much more likely to focus on Ireland than Libya.

Exactly, the ESB is an ideal purchase as it has many performing assets both within and outside the state.
