I wanted to know whats going on in Longford Westmeath's count but despite watching rte for hours on end, only got some indication about how it is going about 6pm. Then, i got home to the internet and found a facebook page and twitter(ers?) page giving updates on it!

RTE should have their coverage better structured! I don't know every 5 or 10 minutes go to a very quick update on every count. (even something like soccer saturday on sky sports!!!:D:D:D) Their job as a national braodcaster is to relay information to us! Waiting for hours for them to tell me what is going on in my constituency... not on! Too much pointing out that obvious that FG are doing brilliant and that FF are ****ed!

Anyhow, social media gave me all the info I wanted! and RTE was ****e! That's all I wanted to say!

Why do some people feel the need to hate RTÉ?
An absolutely brilliant service, both online and on the tv.

Horses for courses, if all you were interested in was one constituency, the best thing to use would be either the web site or teletext. These "culchie" constituencies are not well covered on the live TV feed. The Roscommon result was on the teletext several minutes before the TV coverage reported it. Minging! :D

    Something like this?

    http://www.rte.ie/news/election2011/results/index.html

I've been following on the RTE website which has been pretty good.

I'm not fan of RTE in general. I've found the TV reporting to be poor – earlier on tonight I saw a terrible filler segment where a reporter went "behind the scenes" and was talking to the backstage floor manager. But, the online was impressive in it's scope.

Its not great to be honest, as for the BBC, they know how to cover an election, the swingometre is a sight to be seen.

They only update it when someone is elected or they've started another count. They don't give ya updates after every few votes are counted.

I agree with the OP. It's about time RTE got their finger out and invested in a website...

If they were to give a television update on each constituency every 5 minutes it would give them 15 seconds to discuss each one. I'm not quite sure what people are expecting from them.

I thought the website was giving great coverage.

Well maybe not every five minutes.... but don't have me waiting 2 hours for my constituency to be mentioned! And at the time... I didn't have access to the internet like alot of other people!

Because, unless you're in the club, you're not allowed do it on RTE?

But some consitituancys got way more coverage than others. Sligo/N Leitrim got hardly any. I seen no links from the count centre at all yesterday, they got no more than a few mentions last night totaling about a couple of minutes all togehter. With the longest report lasting about a minute, which focused more on the failure to win a FF seat, than the actual seats won.

They seem to be just concentrating on Cork and Dublin, only Waterford was mentioned once from what i saw.

Their coverage is pathetic compared to what sky and the BBC do for their elections and even the U.S elections. There is a severe lack of information.

I tought their coverage was excellent. Had no problems following their website, which gave fast updates and the iPhone app was faultless.

    Are you serious?

The RTE website is updating each constituency almost as the votes are being announced!

RTE are based in every constituency, the BBC are never.

Don't be so lazy and check that.

They gave great coverage. The tv and radio coverage was going all day. The website had lots of updates and stats and the twitter accounts for each constituency were great. What more do you want? There are so many constituencies it's going to take time to get around them all and actually discuss what's happening. Some people will hate RTE no matter what they do!

I am keeping up to date with it on the rte website. The tv coverage is very poor. They are just not sharp enough. They need to be hurling non stop on screen information at me.

    I enjoyed this...

@RTE_Elections: Gerry Adams says no decision has been taken as to whether he will lead party. I think we know he can't...” #ge11

    Followed by

    @RTE Election

A tweet about Gerry Adams sent earlier in this hour from this account does not represent the views of RTÉ & has been deleted

    :pac:

They have to deal with 43 constituencies, numerous counts and recounts and they have to get political anaylsis to put everything into context and interview recently elected TDs or losers. It's a really tough job and they've done really well.

But some people will never be pleased.

I expect the best from our national broadcaster and i want their coverage to be similar to what Sky and the BBC pull out for elections. I reverse my stance on calling it pathetic because its decent but in comparable with SKY and the BBC its poor.

Lots of comments to the effect that Sky and BBC cover British elections much better than RTE covers our own but little detail on how that is so.
They basically all do the same thing. Large central studio. Reporters at count centres. Interview pundits, analysts, candidates (successful, failed and waiting). Cut to returning officer announcements live. Present results tables and charts. Its a fairly univesal format.

    .

I did. I want them to blow me away with non stop information. I want more on screen graphics. I want it to be similar to the amount of on screen info we get sky sports news.

Idk, I thought the rte.ie coverage and updates were pretty good.
