    Hi all,

I've moved offices to Grand Canal St and I'm traveling from Tallaght, I need the quickest route, I drove home from that office on Friday along the canal > harold's x > KCR > Walkinstown > Greenhills and it took about an hour!! I dread to think how long it would take when the schools are back. :(

I was thinking of going via the Naas Rd on Monday and straight up the canal? A few km's longer but maybe faster than the above route?

I live about a 30 minute (at best) walk to the Square, 40-50mins on Luas, and then another 20-30 minute walk (at best) to the office from Jurys North Wall Luas stop.

Although I could do with the exercise!! :)

edit, and btw, I have college at 6pm three nights a week, finish work at 5.15.:( I'll be late but if I go for the Luas option I'd be REALLY late!!!

Head towards the Stillorgan dual carriageway, then up to the M50 and around to Tallaght. Not sure what it's like outbound on the dual carriageway in the evenings (or inbound in the morning) so might not be benficial, and I think it adds a good few miles.

For some reason the google map link isn't working properly so messy copy paste suggestion below.

the brother in law lives at grand canal dock and cycles to tallaght for work every day, so same journey more or less but the other way round.
    he finds it good because
    a) its free, a fiver a day on luas is 100quid a month, 1200 euro a year approx that he is saving.
    b) door to door, its quick, no probs with congestion, no waiting for busses
    c) you spend enough time indoors, its good to get out in the fresh air and get a bit of exercise!!

They have no car BTW, which does rule out using that as the lazy option.

Cycling sounds like a fast enough option to be honest, only 23km

If I thought I could cycle without collapsing in a heap in the middle of the road after 2km then I'd definitely do that!! :D

    fair nuff!
Still, from grand canal dock to the square is 12.5km (or 7.7miles in old money) ,way shorter than I would have thought.

The advantage of the cycling, is probably the same as whats killing you timewise in the car, traffic lights.
With any congestion it takes a couple of cycles of the lights to get through a junction. On the bike though, you sail to the front of the queue and get through first time! Even dossing it, using the same energy as a leisurly stroll on foot, you'll be flying by the cars stuck at lights.
12.5 km at that dossers pace, without breaking a sweat, should take no more than an hour, so 45min quicker than the car.

This might save you 15 minutes or so:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Belgard+Square+S&daddr=53.3210091,-6.2677932+to:53.32918,-6.23308+to:53.3342585,-6.2320601+to:Upper+Grand+Canal+St&geocode=FVoRLQMdvsue_w%3BFTGdLQMdb1yg_ynpX-efAwxnSDFhker8pscAEw%3BFRy9LQMdCOSg_ynl9U0exw5nSDER0aD7pscAEw%3BFfLQLQMdBOig_yndfT6XwQ5nSDGQ2qD7pscAEw%3BFcrhLQMdRs6g_w&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrsp=3&sz=14&via=1,2,3&sll=53.333436,-6.247015&sspn=0.021681,0.085745&ie=UTF8&ll=53.287436,-6.335249&spn=0.021704,0.085745&z=14

However, it may not. Typically that back route would save time over a clogged canal, but is much longer if the canal is reasonably free.

As for the Naas road, avoid (you know that now). Look at the map of Dublin and look at the arterial routes in/out of the city centre. Don't mix with the traffic that wants to get inside the canal until you absolutely have to. You need to get East, East, East before you get to the canal. Even if it is a longer route.

Can I ask though, are you going in for 9? Your new reality is that if you want to go in for 9, you can expect to sit in your car for hours every day like all the other 9-5ers working in South Dublin city. If I were you I'd get up earlier, go in for 8.15 and spend 30 mins drinking a coffee and reading the paper somewhere comfortable every day. Life's too short, and you might as well spend less of it in your car and change your morning routine.

It'd be nice to have a realistic public transport option, but that's Dublin.

As for the luas, you can get a luas to connolly and a dart to Grand Canal Dock. It's long, but you wouldn't be driving for that time. There's a park and ride at the red cow you could use? That'll add up though, with monthly parking and monthly luas+dart pass.
