Heating a Still?

Does anyone know the best way to heat a still (hot plate maybe), or possible a good reference source to find out? I've been compiling a page on how whiskey is distilling and could use a little help finding out some of the details. I'm a grad student who studies food, so all this stuff is quite interesting to me. This is what I have so far:http://www.awhiskeydrink.com/p/art-of-distilling-whiskey.html
...but I have a long ways to go. Thanks for the help everyone. I thought this looked like a good place to ask around ;)
    Cheers,
    Swift
