just looking through a few results in certain constituences I am failing to understand the strategy of the parties

    a few examples

why did sinn fein go with two candidates in Mayo?

why did FG go with 2 candidates in Dublin North West?

It's just crazy stuff, they basically eat into and divide their own vote and give themselves no chance of getting either candidate elected

Were they ambitious beyond belief and thought one of the two candidates would poll much better and help with transfers to improve the fortunes of the other? I fail to accept this as it suggests their research, analysis and foresight with regard to local polling is fatally skewed

or is it a case of a party being too soft with its electoral candidates and letting two in when one is the best strategy for fear of upsetting somebody? Again if this is the case then I suggest that the leadership and electoral strategy is again poorly execute as they seek to pander to local grass-root interests at the expense of having a TD elected

I am still stumped at the incredible miscalculations in certain constituencies that are costing parties seats?

    Why? Why? Why?

Thats the explanation - party strategists didnt have results to plan with.

I just asked in parallel thread, what was the purpose of 4 FG candidates in Galway West

obviously, hence the need for a strategy, local polling etc., are you telling me they have absolutely zero idea how results will turn out?

Presumably they're using the election as a springboard. If adding another candidate won't do any harm then it will, net, do some good, as that (redundant) candidate will have a reputation to build upon in following elections.

Specifically talking about Fianna Fail - I imagine pride factors in, too.

Sinn Fein running two candidates in Mayo is just bizarre though.
