My diesel car has no power and burning black smoke. the tow man said the engine was gone and it would cost about 5000 euro. When he revved it he said it made a knocking noise. is he right. cant really afford to do anything with it. he said i would be better off selling it and buying a new car

Depending on the make and year of your car , ;you may pick up a second hand engine at a breakers for say 1500 and cost 500 to fit. :p

Any idea what caused it, was it oil starvation or what? Was it serviced regularly?

qashqais (is that how you spell that?) only came out in 2007 i think so surely most of them would still be in manufacturers warranty? don't nissan offer 3 years?

It was serviced about four weeks ago. I asked the mechanic about the whining noise and he said was the turbo, but nothing to be worried about and also did a fitter friend of mine about the same time. The tow guy said it was a seal on the turbo and it took the oil from the engine and boom no power and smoke.

the car is 2007 so warranty is gone. thanks again for the replies

If it has a service history I'd be getting on to Nissan.

Think your getting a bit ahead of yourself. Let a mechanic have a proper look at it. Sounds like a fair bit of damage is done but wouldn't jump to complete new engine yet.

Wouldn't take the word of the tower. Try a find a mechanic who knows that exact engine. Anyone know if what other cars have same engine?

Don't mind what you were quoted you. It would cost (including engine and fitting) somewhere between €2500 and €3750.

The most important thing now is to get a good engine from a breakers.
traynors.biz/ and partfinder.ie have a few there ... just try to get one that's currently running and have someone that knows their stuff check it for you.

As said I think you really need a proper diagnosis and repair quote. "Engine is gone" is very vague, and I'd imagine €5k is the price for a brand new engine bought from and fitted by a Nissan dealer. It sounds like the engine is running at least so it may be repairable, from your later post it may just be that the turbo is gone, which is expensive to replace but not €5k expensive. If it does need a new engine I'm sure one could be got from a scrap yard for a lot less and fitted by and indy mechanic wouldn't be anywhere near €5k.

Thanks for the posts, they very much appreciated. I will get it looked at and see where I will go from there.

should someone be looking for a new engine for a 07 car, that seems bloody mad:confused:

unless it got serious abuse surely it would be expected an engine should last more than 4 years, i would be ringing nissan before i went looking for a second hand engine

That Renault-sourced unit should be pretty bullet proof IF it has been serviced when due using correct oil. I agree that you should definately get another opinion. usually when a turbo seal goes that suddenly the engine goes in to detonation mode whereby it starts running on its own engine oil until completely starved. Have it checked out ! That 1.5 dCi turbo whistles quite loudly in all its installations.

IMO this is a pointless thread until someone who knows what they are talking about has looked at the car.

Its HIGHLY unlikely that this engine would have randomly failed after less then 4 years unless it has huge mileage. If something has seriously failed it would more likely be a servicing issue.

No point coming on looking for help if you don't even know what make and model of car you have.

The tow man might also just be talking out of his behind ...it could be something as simple as a blocked air intake.

Don't give up your engine until your car has been seen by a proper mechanic who knows his stuff.

"Mechanics" who work for towing companies rank straight after taxi drivers in diagnostic skills :D

I can't wait to see what the problem actually is... keep us updated on the situation

Sorry for my bad sentence forming, just to clear up it is a qashqai 1.5 DCI SVE. It has a bit of mileage on it about 100,000 miles or 160,000km. I will keep ye posted on the outcome. I doubt the engine was the main problem after four years, but when the turbo went it drained the oil from the engine. This may have damaged the engine.Although it is still running, but with a lot of smoke and no power.

    Thanks again for the replies

Just to keep ye update. The turbo is gone, but the engine is ok:D. The catalytic converter suffered a bit, due to the smoke but should be grand. thanks for the help.

Good that it's not the complete engine. Do you have a full service history? I'd be trying for a goodwill gesture from Nissan still. I know it's high mileage but it's worth a try!
