First steps to becoming a Chef........

    I am 29 years old and have recently decided to change careers. I have a hugh passion for food and really want to become a chef. A few weeks ago I approached a restaurant and offered my services free of charge to help out in their kitchen. I loved every minute of it and must have impressed sufficently as they want to take me on as a Comis Chef but not before I begin a Failte Ireland Professional Cookery apprenticeship Programme http://www.failteireland.ie/Tourism-Education/Earn---Learn/Professional-Cookery---National-Apprenticeship-Pro I am delighted with this and cant wait to begin. I think it envolves a couple of days per week based in college(probably D.I.T) and the rest of the week with my employer.

    What I would love to know is has anybody used this route to become a Chef? If so what did they make of it? Is it a worthwhile course etc etc??

    I’m also looking hoping to become a chef, have an interview in Killybegs College next week so I can’t give you answers to your questions I’m afraid. I’d love to hear how you are getting on so far though?

    I know of people who went this route and work in a kitchen myself, not a chef though. They found it good because not only are you getting a qualification, but while you're getting a qualification you're working, getting experience and gaining valuable contacts.

    Good idea - to get some experience.

    Did you put a time limit on working for free?
