Today, my landlord told me that "for health and safety reasons" I will need to provide him with the key to the safe in my room.

Like, I know he has the key to the door, and could and probably does go in when I'm not there, just to check that every thing is ok, which I'm not really that happy about, but what can I do, but now this? Now he needs the key to the place where I store my private documents?

    Is this like... lawful?
Does he think I'm storing a ticking bomb in there or somthing like.

Maybe im not ENTITLED to privacy when im renting or somthing is it?

Your landlord is not allowed to enter your rented dwelling WITHOUT YOUR EXPRESS PERMISSION. If he is entering withouy your permission, then he is in breach of tenancy law. In essence, he is trespassing and you are entitled to have him removed.

There is no way I'd be handing the key over to him. I'd be reminding him very strongly about his duties as a landlord.

He is not allowed to do it. If he wants to enter the premises he has to contact you and organise a time that suits you. He cannot just show up when ever he wants. Don't give him the key!

I am assuming this is a house share situation, with your landlord living in the same house OP, as opposed to him dropping by whenever he feels like it?

Your landlord has not right to the key of your bedroom, or the key of your safe!

If I'm honest, the fact that he wants both not only sounds like an invasion of privacy, but very weird.

Give the landlord access (by appointment) for routine inspections

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/landlords_rights_and_obligations.html
You(the landlord) do not have the right to:

    * Enter your tenants’ home without permission
    * Take or retain your tenants’ property – even if they haven’t paid the rent
    * Charge more than the market rate for the property
    * Penalise tenants for bringing a dispute to the PRTB.

If he wants to see inside the safe he will have to prove that what is contained within the safe is somehow part of his obligations as a landlord.

as a tenant you also have to make sure that you do not cause the landlord to be in breach of the law but i really really really really ( i could keep going ) doubt that the contents of your safe are going to break any laws that would cause the landlord to somehow break the law.

do you own the safe or does he? If he owns it and an agreement was made that you could use it then its called a special term(s) in your tenancy agreement.

If its your safe bought with your money, containing your property than he has no rights under irish law to view the contents without your express permission.

If he keeps bringing the issue up you can get a third party (solicitor) involved who will spell out the exact rights and obligations he has as a landlord.
He can ask to view the property he owns NOT your property.

It would be like if I rented a house from you and you now have access to my car because its in the driveway.

I was reading this and then read it out to my older brother.. his exact words were:

"....would you f**k off..." (in astonishment to what the landlord is asking)

But then said something brilliant. If you do not give the landlord a key it would be rocking the boat and maybe you arent in a situation to find another place. So give him a any old key :)
    >> he'll try to use it. But clearly wont say you gave him the wrong key out of blatant obviousness he tried to use it.
