Mary O Rourke, gone?

The Mother of the Dail, Mary O'Rourke seems to have done astonishingly badly in her constituency, polling just around 3,000 first preferences.

That's a terrifically bad result, many would have assumed that O'Rourke, through her high profile, would have retained a significant personal vote. Is this the first really big name to have fallen to the Fianna Fail bloodletting today?

Don't know why she bothered running - she actually put her running mate's seat in trouble.

    Bye Mammy.........

She might have a high profile, but she'd be better off without it. Any time I heard her speak she talked inconsistent ****e (saying she wanted an election in the media but not doing anything about it in the Dáil)

The only worry I'd have is that if she's unemployed then some station might be thick enough to have her on-air more often!

I don't know how she is going to explain this one to her ego!

No suprises there. I'd say a lot of her core vote went to Kevin 'Boxer' Moran who ran as an independent after he failed to get the Fianna Fáil party nomination.

If there is one person I will miss more from public discourse it will be Mary O'Rourke's alter-ego on Friday Liveline.

Nevertheless, I think the woman should be given her own chat show. There she could mix political debate with sex advice and sentimental memories of the middle ages.

The one great attribute she brought to politics, particularly recently, was that she was a straight talker. Leaving party politics aside, I'm sure it's a very sad day for O'Rourke personally... nevertheless I'm sure her self confidence will see her through!

    She was a dreadful incompetent.
    Drove me nuts.
Remember how she burned the whole country on Telecom shares.
Then her election campaign team who 'worked like blacks'
    What a dope.
Unreal how she lasted so long.
    Goodbye and good riddance.

Did the people that bought them not realise that shares can go down as well as up? If someone lost money on Eircom then they only have themselves to blame.

She will be eliminated after the 2nd count. 700 points behind next highest with about 1000 2B distributed after 1st count when all the minnows were eliminated

Poor Mary, she really hadn't a clue. At least she can relax now on a big fat pension.

Bloody old witch. We had to form a guard of honour (deary me) for the old cow back around 92 when she visited the CBS secondary school in New Ross. As she passed me she muttered some old cobblers about my tie not being straight :D

F*** off you old slag! I was only about 12 and it was on a sodding Saturday morning too.

I'm delighted these FF dynasties are dissapearing off the political map.

It would seem that you would have benefited from a generous dose of the leather. (Spare the rod, spoil the child.)

Better you had been taught how to zip it as a schoolchild than that you grow up giving foul-mouthed insults to your betters. :p

Did the people that bought them not realise that shares can go down as well as up? If someone lost money on Eircom then they only have themselves to blame.

The whole point of the privatisation was to bring widespread share ownership to the people. Share the wealth. Spin the good story. Wean us off our property ownership hangup.

People are not ordinarily widely clued into stockmarkets and saw this as a trustworthy Government incentive, not a punt.

Mary had a brainwave that she could make a few bob for the Treasury and floated the bloody things too high. She was told not to by the experts.

Everything that woman touched turned to sh1te.

She was Ireland's King Midas in reverse.

(I myself did not lose any money so no personal gripe)
