Any of you lot played the above course?

Is it long? Is it worthwhile playing?

    Anything to look out for?

Played in a few times don't find it overly long. Not a bad track I've always felt it could be better it's very playable compared to the Monty for the average handicap golfer. Some of the bunkers can be a bit penal but nothing like the Monty. Get yourself a strokesaver lots of Par 4's that if you have the length you can shoot accross dog legs.

Front nine is pretty straight forward everything pretty much in front of you. Good Par 5 the sixth i think which has a 90 degree dogleg on it. 9th is a good par four if you can carry last bunker on left you can leave yourself with very short second shot.

Feature holes are the 14th - 16th, two par three's and a par 5 with water very much in play. 14th depends on the tee your off but is a serious drop plays between 165-130 yards. 15th long par 5 water in front of the green have to be really accurate with your 3rd shot.
16th a par 3 of about 170 yards all carry over water.

agree with dero on his opinion of the course.certainly isnt overly long.its kept well and the stretch of holes that dero mentioned 14-16 are nice holes.the par5 is very nice with option of going for green that is split from fairway by water,so all carry.if you drive well you will score well and def worth playing it in my opinion

Very nice course, well worth playing. The Amen Corner around 14,15,16 is, as mentioned, a great stretch of holes. If I was to pick one hole I find a bit ordinary (actually, I'll take two) it would be the par-three 4th and the par-five 17th. Other than that, I think it's a lovely course with great greens.

Have to agree with you on these but I would say that the 4th has a great green, easy to 3 putt if you are on the wrong landing area.

Its a shameless plug but you can view flybys of all 18 holes here http://www.cartonhousegolf.ie/golf-course-3d-omeara.html just click on open info in the box and they should play.

The 5th is my favoutite hole (off the back tips) second shot is a real test, especialy if the pin is front left

Only played it once and the holes that stood out for me were 14 15 and 16. (two par 3's and a par5 between them). Well worth a visit though.

Played it once and cant say i liked it at all. Bar the holes mentioned, which are stunning, i found it unbelievably boring. Play Mount juliet, headfort new or adare manor if you want to pay top euro for parkland golf.

They've destroyed the Monty there, in my opinion. Cut back all the rough and taken away the course's main characteristic - the need to drive the ball straight. Now it's the opposite, you can drive it all over the shop and still score. Terrible shame, has really robbed it of its asthetic beauty as well.

Played it today in this wonderful sunshine.

I found the layout quite tough and deceivingly long. It's a decent test of golf.

The "amen corner" if you like is beautiful and I love it even more as I shot -3 through that stretch :)

Overall a very enjoyable round of golf, although it's a tough walk if you are unfit :pac:

Thanks again for the comments ;)

    Played from the white tees.

Think 14 was about 170 yards from elevated tee. Hit a 7 iron to the position displayed below (bout 20ft from the pin). Had the benefit of a read from my playing partner. Started the putt just right edge and it dropped.

15 is very, very similar to the 16th at the Palmer Course at the K Club.

Driver off 15 to the left fairway. Laid up with rescue club to about 70 yards. Chopped a 54 degree to the left-hand side of the green and it rolled back down the hill to 4ft. Holed the putt.

16 was about 165. Hit an easy 7 iron but it cut slightly on me and ended up just off the green. My two playing partners both overhit the green. Putt was fairly straight but think I may have benefited from a little bobble late on :D

Fantastic stuff, thanks for that - and great pics. Have played the course many many times and it's one of my favourites. Well done, three birdies on that stretch of holes is serious golfing. 15th is indeed a ringer for the par five at the K Club.

Playing off a 15HC, I can only dream of three birdies around Amen Corner! I'm usually quite content with three bogies in fact :)

How did you play the rest of the course? I actually really like the 13th hole as well, a very under-rated hole.

No problem. Some nice pics there alright.

I was -4 on the back 9. Made birdie on 12 also. Missed a 4ft downhill putt on 17 for birdie.

My front 9 was very poor. Dreadful in fact. I played some nice approaches on 5 and 9 but that was as good as it got. I left the course with a right smile on my face :) which was stark contrast of how I felt walking off the 9th

    I play off 9.

    It's definitely a course I'll re-visit during the summer.

If you (or any of your playing partners) have a handicap of 18 and above I'd advise playing off the green tees.

Is the Monty not severely softened these days though? With the rough cut wayyy back etc?

I doubt he does. 2011 is the year pinkdoubleeagle gets to scratch. If I remember correctly he was off 0.5 end of last season

Thanks. Four of us are single figures so hoping to play off the back markers. Forecast is good for Friday so should be a cracking day

Played O'Meara course yesterday in near perfect conditions and was very impressed. Really liked the layout and will definitely head back soon. Played off the blue sticks which measures around 7,000 yards. Struck the ball well but putting was very sub standard. Greens were excellent. True and very quick.

Ended up with 35 points off 1 which included three 3-putts.

I'm at loose end to play golf tomorrow in the Dublin/Wicklow/Kildare area...
Would this be worthwhile to visit this club and which course would suit me...im a 11 handicapped, reasonable average off the tee...short game good!!!:):):)

Oh yeah is this within the 40euro bracket???

It's €35 with a member, Ben... Playing off 11 you'll certainly be well able for either course. My personal recommendation would be the O'MEara but you'd be happy enough either way.

Played it a few times during the summer. Always in great condition and a good test of golf. The new holes won't be open for a while yet.

Cheers, pardon my ignorance but do you mean the full 18 holes aren't in play?

The original 18 are in play. The two new holes (1st and 18th) are still under construction.
