    Hi folks,

My HP HDX16 laptop has developed a very strange keyboard problem, most likely caused by a little person sitting on it :o
At first I noticed that pressing the spacebar was turning Numlock on & off, which it is still doing. Then we realised there was a serious problem with the keyboard.
When you press g the letters bgtv are typed out (in either Chrome or Word for example), if you press h the letters nhym come up, a lot of letters just don't work e.g. a,s,d,f,j,k,l,x,w,o,p.
Z turns Caps on & off, c opens help in chrome, excel and word.
    Q,e,u & i work!!!!
Of the numbers, 1,2,4,9 and 0 work, the other do nothing when pressed.

I've run AVG PC Tune up and Ccleaner and fixed all issues they came back with on the Registry (of which there were a few). I've restarted but that hasn't changed the issue.

So, has anybody ever encountered such a bizarre problem before? Can anyone offer any assistance please, I'd be very grateful as it's driving me crazy!
Should I uninstall drivers or something?

As an aside, the touchpad hasnt worked for a long time on it either, right click works, touchpad moves the cursor but double tapping and left clicking don't do anything so we have to use a USB external mouse.

    I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2.

    Thanks!

    try this http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/KeyTweak%20Manual.pdf
set new keyboard layout ,or else you could replace the keyboard,or use a usb keyboard.inside the laptop, the keyboard connects up by 1 ribbon cable.

    or see this http://www.easytousetools.com/keyboard_remapper/,
theres probably free programs to do to remap the keys.

Thanks for the suggestions Ricman, I'll try those out this evening. It really is a bizarre issue.

I'm tempted to wipe Vista & upgrade to 7, even though the laptop has 8gb of RAM it performs poorly. Would anyone think it might be Vista causing the problem?

To help you decide if it's a hardware or configuration issue, can you get access to a usb keyboard? Plug that in and see will that work correctly.

Another option is to try a live cd of ubuntu, a linux operating system. You download the image file, burn it to cd (you can also boot from a usb stick) and load up another operating system without affecting your current one.

If the usb keyboard works fine, and the other operating system still doesn't work correctly, then you may have a faulty keyboard.

They're not massively expensive to replace, but cross that bridge when you come to it.

or could be that keyboard is set to wrong region.

Under Control Panel window configure the keyboard settings in Regional and language. Or with vista or 7 use the searching method to find it or under my Computer
Menu. Typed Regional and language and it find for you and double click on it to open it.

    Regional and language options
Is to change Regional and language option settings to set your right requirements so you can understand your computer in own Regional and language settings. Because most computers are setup in American English Regional and language option settings or sometimes maybe set in the Regional and language option settings wherever you buy it. Change Regional and language settings to suit your needs or customer needs. Also under language menu details section in settings submenu change the keyboard language because most computers are setup in American English keyboard language option settings or sometimes maybe set in the keyboard language option settings wherever you buy it. Change keyboard language settings to suit your needs or customer needs.
