Does anyone (or anyone's parents/grandparents :)) know when Telefis Eireann arrived in Kerry. Have tried all avenues and no good. Because of topography I think it was not rolled out simultaneously. This is to settle a bet ....... friend says 1961 but I think it was 1963 or so. As fas as I remember, antennae had to be erected in Mullaghanish and somewhere in Clare to get a signal in to this part of the Kingdom at Kerry/Cork/Limerick boundary.

The Mullaghanish site was one of the five original Telefís Éireann 625 line transmitters, and opened in December 1962.

As Deputies know, when the television service commenced on 31st December, 1961, it was at first confined to 405 line transmissions from Kippure but the Authority's aim was to extend the coverage throughout the country as quickly as possible. The 625 line transmissions commenced from Kippure on Ist November, 1962, and the main provincial transmitters were brought into service on low power with temporary aerials in December, 1962. Due mainly to delays caused by bad weather they were not, however, in full operation with permanent aerials on permanent masts until the following dates:

    Truskmore (405 lines) 1st April, 1963

    Mount Leinster 12th June, 1963

    Maghera 10th September, 1963

    Mullaghanish 12th September, 1963

    Truskmore (625 lines) 18th November, 1963

    Testing from Dec 1962

    Thursday, 4 April 1963

During the past year, the Authority's main concern was to extend the television service to the whole country as quickly as possible. It had hoped that the provincial transmitters at Truskmore, Mount Leinster, Mullaghanish and Maghera would all be in full operation before the end of 1962. Unforeseen delays and difficulties prevented this and the recent appalling weather has caused further delay. At the present time the only provincial mast which has been completed is that at Truskmore. Nevertheless television transmissions have been made since 23rd December, 1962 from Mount Leinster, Mullaghanish and Truskmore and since 10th February from Maghera. None of these stations is yet operating on full power and temporary masts are being utilised at Mount Leinster, Mullaghanish and Maghera.

Thanks to The Cush for that info. This friend of mine reckons he saw the food drops in the mountains of Wicklow (on TV here in Kerry) during the year of the bad snow. So, I guess he is partly right. However, I'll only buy him the large Brandy and Port if he buys me one back :o. Not getting too medical/technical about it, could he have false memory syndrome ........ maybe seeing footage of this years later?
