Decided recently that i wanted to start making my own chain mail. Found the correct tools, pliers, wire, a dowel and assorted other materials.

Was just wondering has anyone any experience with this and can give a few pointers. once i have finished what i am working on i'll see if i can recommend a better way of doing it for anyone attempting to or think about starting off.

have no camera at the moment so will post pics of the results so far later on.

thanks for any and all input.

I'm not trying to be smart, but if you google 'making chain mail' there are numerous tutorials and videos.

looksee - saying "not trying to be smart" makes your above helpful post seem unnecessarily bitter! This forum is here to help and discuss - so hopefully anyone who has experience with chainmail will answer the Op.

Looking forward to seeing what you are working on OP - how large a piece are you working on?

Michaelpower, I apologise if my answer came across as dismissive or bitter, that was not my intention at all. It would seem to me that watching a video would be more helpful than trying to read intructions.

I think you will find that there are very few people who can make proper chain mail in Ireland, people who want the effect usually create imitation mail just for effect.

at the moment i am stuck between making a coif or just a set of sleeves with a piece of leather holding them on. not too sure yet.

i take no offence to what you said. i have watched a few videos and know more or less whats going on i am just asking for pointers from someone who knows what they are doing. if i can talk to them directly in thread or pm or whatever it will be better than posting on a video 2-4 years old that might not illicit a response.

will try and get pictures of what i have so far up tonight.

in saying that does anyone happen to have a spare mannequin body or head i could use? can work without but would be easier with.

    Thanks.

Looking forward to seeing pics. I knitted my own chain maille using galvanised steel rings. Was aiming for a full suit but even to do enough to go around my forearm took a long time using the 4 in 1 method. I still have not finished it and have a big box of maille im fed up with :P

Fair play to you trying to do your own links with the wire

The best way to learn is youtube or theringlord.com, good luck!
