I got a car about a month ago and just got the log book so am going to tax it. The only thing is, is that the last tax disc is gone and the previous owner cant remember when it was last out. He thinks it was the end of 09 sometime (car was lying up a long time). How do i find out so i can fill in the tax form. Thanks for any help

As far as I know you don't need to worry about the last tax disc if you are the new owner. I bought a car in December whose tax was out by a month and I only had to pay for the period I owned the car. There was no back tax to pay as they only took it from the date of registration in my name on the Registration Cert.
Perhaps someone has a different idea but that was my experience. :)

The last time i had to tax a car with a lapse in it i had to get the cops to sign the form. i'm assuming i'll have to do the same again. if i go without it filled in will they make it awkward for me

You only tax it from when you were owner. You have to pay complete months though so if you bought it on the 25th of January for example, you would now have to tax it from 1st of january.

It is not your concern whether the car was taxed in the last year or 2 years.

Why do you want to go to guards.
When did you buy a car?
I you bought it f.e. on 10 February, then you get a form RF100a (motor tax renewal form) and fill it that you want to tax your car from 02/11...
No need to fill in no use declaration. No need for garda signature.

    Op,

I was in a similar situation last year.
Car i bought hadnt been taxed for 2,5 (afiak) years but i only had to pay for 13 months.
Extra month was for the month i had been driving, waiting for the log book as were you.

I just went to the tax office with my logbook and the money.

You are not liable for motor tax that expired when the car was registered to the previous owner no matter how long it had expired before you bought the car. Your responsibility only begins from the date you bought the car.

If you bought the car in Jan and have used it since then just pay tax from Feb and pay arrears for Jan.

In the event the car has not been used at any time since you bought it then you can avoid paying tax for Jan & Feb by going to a Garda station and declare it off the road for Jan & Feb using the for RF100A (this is what you've done in the past). Please note the Garda's signature is not approval or confirmation of your declaration, it is only there to confirm he witnessed you making this declaration.

You might like to leave the car off-road until 1st March before doing this otherwise you'll have to pay tax for Feb.

PS: in case you didn't know, you don't need to wait for the log book, you can tax the car at any time once you have the car's details.

    What did you get BTW?
