    Hi guys,

I'm in Sydney at the moment and there is a lot of coverage of the work of the Urban Search and Rescue teams in Christchurch. Teams from all over the world have gathered in New Zealand.

It got me wondering , what is Irelands USAR capability. Do we have a national team or has one ever been set up.

It struck me its capability ( a national team) that we should have but hopefully will never have to use and that a highly trained Irish team could be used to help other countries when disaster hits.

Civil De fence also were setting it up a while back, I also wonder if NAS has a group to do something similar to the UK's HART teams. They might fit into this role. I think they have the high angel and hazmat stuff?

NAS have the Incident Response Team which are based in the Dublin/North Leinster Region.
They are trained in many skills including rope/height rescue, marine rescue, mass casualty/major incident. They work closely with the Irish Air Corps who trained the team in rescue using helicopters, as in medivac. The Air Corp will also fly the team to anywhere in Ireland at extremely short notice, ie; when pagers go off the Air Corp are also alerted.
The IRT also work alongside an Garda Síochána.

AFAIK Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service is the declared USAR resource for the whole island and for Irish involvement overseas

Most of the NAS area's have their version of this ie Special Incident Unit, MERT etc. Most of the team leaders & longer serving personnell of these units are trained in heights rescue, decontamination of casualties etc. Getting more prevalent with newer member of the NAS too as the different regions are starting to traing these up as well.

I think it's fair to say the capability may be there, but the training and equipment certainly isn't at present. USAR training is a huge specialist topic, with vast amounts of courses needed.

It's up and running in Dublin, though it's still in its infancy. Usar is made up of vols from other areas of CD. Some training and practical stuff has been done, but it is still a work in motion.
