Effect of Illness Benefit on Tax Credits

    Hi all,

In the middle of sorting out my tax affairs from last year. PAYE, married both working, substantial health expenses for 2010, and wife claimed Illness Benefit for two months during the year.
When I claimed health expenses, they reduced the refund based on the Illness Benefit my wife had claimed, by taxing the full amount of the benefit and then saying there was an effect on tax credits (this is the part I do not understand and cannot find any proper online info, so help would be appreciated).
    The rest is my rant:
I could not make my claim through paye anytime, because the health expenses amount was over the limit (whatever that is), I had to send a MED1.
I followed up with a call two weeks later, at which point they asked me to send on the P60s.
They then send the refund, the reduction for which I could not get a proper explanation, but advising them that the first six weeks of Illness benefit was not taxable they send a further refund.
I now have a letter from them saying they want to verify my health expenses and sent another blank Med1 for me to fill out.
