Hey, just wondering if anyone has done this course and do you need a business or computer background to get in? I have a background in biology but really interested in this course.

That was the case when I did it (2000). It worked out well for me coming from a business background, but I'm not sure I would have preferred something with more technical content: the business stuff is taken from the MBA program at DCU, so it is good, but not of massive value if you've done Commerce as I had.

There are 2 streams; a technical one and a business one. I'd find it hard to make a call on the business one (business is based a lot on common sense, so technical knowledge if always objecivlely more usable), but I'd say you definitely would need a computers background to do the technical stream....but I guess they'll sort this out in the application process anyway.

There are a couple of other courses which are a bit mor technical which might be more appropriate to you; I knew a few people from science background that did it; it's the Graduate Diploma in Computing

The business stream, and individual course content, has changed significantly since 2000.

Comparing the business and technical streams really is pointless as often the long term objectives of the people doing each are different, therefore they both have valid pros and cons.

OP there are a number of threads about the course in this forum.

    Thanks for your comments! :)

Del C, when you mention that there are more technical courses out there, is that saying that the Ecommerce course isn't in depth? I have a pure biology background so both commerce and computers would be new to me from a technical point of view.

From your experience, would it be difficult for someone with no previous knowledge of business and computers?

If you have an open mind and are willing to learn then you should be able to pick it all up.

Also you may want to look at the M.sc in Bioinformatics which crosses biology etc with computing.

You dont need a business or computing background to do this course. They teach you Java, networks and web design from scratch. Having a business background does help but not nessesary, it just means you have to do some extra work researching some business basics.

Its not a walk in the park as its takes a lot of work, very unlike an undergrad, this course is not for slackers.
The course itself is excellant and geared towards you getting a job and be able to 'hit the ground' running on your first day at work.

If you choose the technical stream you need a technical background.

If you choose business it is best to have a business background, however there are currently a couple of people in the course at the moment with no business background.

As all work is based in groups you will be expected (by your group) to have a competent business background. As you do not, you would need to work that little bit harder to develop your business skills.

I do recommend that you go for it thought, it's a fantastic course.

What areas are you interested in? There are a number of large successful international companies based in Ireland crying out for good people who have done this course.

One of the problems though is that there are a lot of average people who also do the course.

Grades are First, Second, Pass and Fail. There is no such grade as a 2.1.

Those on business stream who must take the computing school subjects (Java etc..,) or chose computing school subjects are more inclined to get a First based on how easily these subjects are graded in comparison to the business school subjects. The computing school subjects are pretty pointless in general with only a few topics covered of any note or relevance. The UX area of Web Design has a good basis although it's not explored enough. Information Access is also informative if a little light in content.

You'll get Google roles online. Unless you are highly technical then a language would be desirable and give you some advantage. There are a lot of people out there with top notch qualifications.

    I have no idea.

Typically developers are not the type of people who would be doing the business stream of this degree.

    Hello,

I am thinking of applying for this.

I am just wondering what are the job prospects on completion of this course?

I am torn between the Accounting course and this.

The aim would be to do very well in this course and go straight out and get a job in Google/Paypal or decent level in a Bank etc.

What has become of past students? Is there a high level of successful graduates?

    Lets start off here.

What role do you want to work at in Google/Paypal or in a bank?
