has any one here have any stories or experiences theyd like to share about working on a cruise ship???

i recently applied for looooads of them, just to see if anything would happen! forgot all about it, then got an email today asking if i wanted to proceed with the application, basically they wanted to make sure i was serious cos they pay flights and expenses! im 25, and have nothing to lose!!! so i replied back, just there, telling them that yes, i was 100% serious!! can anyone give me advice about interviews etc and what SHOULDNT i say...cos i think i know what i should say!

but basically, the job sounds great and i have ALWAYS wanted to travel, but just find it so difficult to save, and i know the hours are long on board a ship, but i would love to save on board while working (accomodation on board and meals all paid for!!!) and go travelling when my contract is up!!!!!
I would LOOVE to hear if anyone has ever done this before!!! :)

(hope im on the right board!!! :))

One of my aunts did it for about 15 years, worked her way up to a fairly senior position on board. It's a great way to save money alright cause you've nothing to spend it on. The hours are very very long and you'll be away for long periods, she was with carnival in the carribean and came home for 6 wks about once a year, but I'm sure you've thought about this!

Good luck, I'm quiet jealous actually, wouldn't mind taking off for a few years!

Wow!!! 15 years???!!!! thats a long time! she must of loved it to stick to it so long! i dont mind so much the long hours! i know itll be very tiring, but i honestly think it would be so worth it! the job is only contracted for 4 to 6 months with the possibility of renewing it! but i can see how it goes anyway! :) (im talkin like i already have the job! :o)

What ever you do, do not pay any sort of fee up front. Any agency that charges the employee is a con. Their fees are taken straight from the shipping company. http://www.vikingrecruitment.com/ used to be one of the better outfits.

I worked on board various cruise ships for about 4 years in the casino. Probably the best on board job there is (casino can only open in international waters so was off in every port). Other jobs do have very long hours but if you are prepared for a major change in lifestyle and have the commitment then go for it. Incidentally I found that homesickness was a major reason for people breaking their contracts and leaving early.

I would LOVE to do this, im taking a year out in september and would love to travel and this seems an ideal way of incorporating saving and travelling. let me know how this goes. also how far in advance did you apply?? and also do you have to have experience?

I worked for Carnival as well. The Sensation, The Fascination, The Inspiration. Your aunt must have worked very hard to reach a senior position onboard.

Yes, the hours are very long, but when you get a shore day it's worth it

Contact the company and they will refer you to the agency of choice for the cruise line..

Be aware that some lines pay the housekeeping staff a pittance and these people are expected to make up for this shortfall with tips.
Just be sure to know exactly the salary on offer.

thinking that working on a cruise ship is "travelling" are being very nieve. the hours are crazy long and you just get to see the nice places and not spend time on them

Better than working for free, which people will have to do in Ireland now.

Good for you Chris but by way of a cautionary note be sure to know exactly what your salary will be before you start - some jobs on some ships pay an absolute pittance.
