When I try to log onto the Market on my HTC Desire I am getting the following message: "A network error has occured.Retry or cancel and return to the previous screen".
Don't know what has caused this, just happened in the last few days.Does anyone know how I can fix it or reinstall Market?
    Thanks.

Fix your internet and error goes away.

Can access the Internet and all other apps no problem on my HTC. It's just the Market I can't get into.

Try settings -> applications -> find market in list -> clear settings.

Thanks for advice. Tried that but no joy unfortunately.

Try the same, but this time look for "google services framework", clear data and cache for that. Failing that factory reset will fix it, but I'm sure you don't want to nuke device :(

I did that and I now can get as far as the screen where you have to accept the Market terms and conditions. When I accept, I get the same error message. Never had to previously accept terms and conditions, that must be a new thing:confused:
Trying to avoid factory reset if at all possible:(

That's really bizarre. Yeah you only need to accept market the first time, but now it's reset so you gotta accept again. Am thinkin a reinstall of market might be in order, you will have to find the latest APK online. I think it needs root access tho to overwrite system stuff.

Are you SURE you have proper internet? Are you using wifi or 3g? What carrier 3g? What wifi? Maybe the port for market is blocked. That error message just means it has connection problems.

Using 3G. When I go onto settings -> wireless and networks -> mobile network- it appears to be connected. But you've given me the idea of checking if I can log on through wi fi somewhere tomorrow.
I was away travelling and disabled all the network connections while I was gone to avoid data roaming charges, I've obviously messed up something!!

Sorry meant to also say I'm with O2

Yeah best to try on a wifi that you know is working before doing anything drastic :) Note that many workplaces have restricted wifi (only port for web and mail is open, so market wont work). Someone's home wifi should work fine.

O2 are notorious for portblocking stuff btw, but they sell android now so I assume at least market works (last year it didn't).

Did you get that last software update? I bet you didn't. Go to settings, about phone, system software updates.

Will try that tomorrow and report back. Thanks for all your help!

Thanks but did that and it says my phone is up to date.

Oh right. I'm on O2 and had the exact same problem. Everything worked but the market. Software update sorted it.

I've just noticed that this is also happening to me. I checked for the new software and there was a software update.
I've let that go and I've gone back to the internet and it's all working fine, but Market is still giving the "A network error has occured. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen".

Any other suggestions bar a hard reset? I think in the past this was related to googlemail/gmail.

*edit* I've read online that you can go to setting/manage apps and got to the market and uninstall the updates.
    It didn't work for me.

So, I've then thought that I maight check my accounts/sync to verify that it's synced to googlemail.

When I got to settings/account&sync it gives another force close error.

"The application Settings (process com.andriod.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close".

So now I can't even use the menus.

Who to call here? The retailer or O2 customer care?

Do O2 brand their phones? Does problem happen with custom rom?

Been happening today to me also. but you can install through the Web.

I'm on stock android on o2 by the way. so might just be an o2 issue.

Happened to me last week for about half a day. I could access the internet but it wouldnt open the market for me. It eventually fixed itself. Were you accessing the market via 3G or wifi? The problem fixed itself eventually when I started tio use the wifi again. Might have been a coincidence that it fixed it self the same time i started using the wifi.

Yep. Went home and the market worked on wi-fi and now is working regardless.
I still can't access the "account&sync" menu in the settings and get a force close as soon as I press it.
Strange. I think Google make poxy changes which they are not fully testing on their devices. They seem to identify risk post deployment of new initiatives.

I tried accessing Market on wi-fi today and still no joy:( I then tried accessing Market online and tried to download an app onto my Htc but it said that no devices were associated with my gmail account:confused: So that must be the source of the problem.
I have had the same gmail account since I first got my Htc and can still access gmail and chat fine on my Htc.Any ideas how I can reestablish the connection between my phone and gmail account to allow me back into Market?
    Thanks.

Going to Manage Applications\Market and clicking Uninstall Update fixed it for me.

Tried that again. Can get as far as accepting the terms and conditions of the Market and then I get the same error message. "A network error has occured.Retry or cancel and return to the previous screen".

    Thanks anyway!
