Motor tax up for renewal - what to do?

My car tax is up next week but I'm hoping to change the car the following week. I will be probably paying a full years motor tax for the new car around 10th March.

Question is do I have to pay the tax on my current car? Its a 2 litre petrol so even if I do pay for a full year and and get 11 months back, it will still cost me €60/€70. Pity you can't pay motor tax weekly (or can you??)

Any solutions (apart from not renewing my current tax)?

what date is on the current disc? if its feb 2011 you have until end of march to retax. and i dont think you can get a rebate unless the car has not been used (there are a couple of other ways to get a rebate but i think it covers illness or being out of the country on defence forces missions)

you can tax it for 3 months, but i have to say if it were me i'd take my chances for a week. If you are stopped plead ignorance, the guard will more than likely just tell you to go and tax it.

You wont get any tax money back unless the car is going to scrap yard so dont tax for a year. I would drive it tbh if it has been taxed to end of Feb and you will be only driving it for a week.
    Awaits backlash from others here!

Posts that encourage drivers to break the law e.g. telling people to make false motor tax declarations may result in either an infraction or a banning.
Similar punishment will be awarded to those who request such advice.

People should keep the motors charter in mind before posting on this thread.

Tax for 3 months, or dont drive it. Alternatively drive it and dont pay and if you are stopped then tell them the cheques in the post although I didnt say that:D

Unless you've something lined up already it'll take a lot more than a week to find the right car at the right price. I'd tax the car for 3 months.

The car IS destined for the scrap yard. The tax renewal notice says the tax cert expires the last day of February (doe this mean I have until the end of March to tax it?)

New car is ordered and definitely due to arrive 10th March (not holding my breath on the date.

Personally if I was in the OP situation I would not tax it and continue to drive it.

Ok so its being scrapped. Tax it for 3 months, claim 2 back if all sorted before end of march. At least that way if delivery date moves, you can still drive without worrying

I'm aware that driving away is what most people would do - myself included - I'm just wondering is there a legal way of minimising/avoiding the cost of renewing my own?

No, that means you've til the end of feb to tax it.

Nope, it must be taxed and a current tax disc displayed if it's in a public place.

Thanks for all the advice folks

Advice some people gave you were wrong.
If you tax it for 3 months (March, April, May) you won't get any refund.

If you want to stay completely legal, it might be probably cheaper to use taxis for first 10 days of March, then paying 3 months tax.

Anyone know what the fine/penalty is for not having tax paid & displayed?

I don't know what the fine is but I have been at checkpoints quite a few times with motor tax that had expired within 30 days (shame on me and I am not condoning such carry on) and the Gardai had no issue with it, obviously I explained how I fully intend to tax the car before that months end. I'd be more worried about a traffic warden slapping a ticket on it.

Even if you taxed it for 3 months you won't get a refund. Afaik you have to have 3 whole months of valid tax due. If you went to claim in 10th March you would only have 2 and half months. So you would need 6 months now and then lose 1 month's of tax payment, but will be refunded the other 5.

Have you tried speaking to the dealer you're buying from? They would probably give you a loaner for a week or two considering you're buying from them.
