First, the queen has no say in the matter. Are you, perhaps, thinking of Elizabeth I, who was possibly the last queen of England with the power to make such a decision?

Second, it might be worth noting that the only time Ireland was united was under, and later with, Britain.

Any foreign dignitary who is a democratic and wants to visit our country is more then welcome in my opinion.

Don't know why she would need to apologise for anything.

i understand she hasnt got the power to do the above individually but she was supposed to come over as a head of state figure, would she not be used as such in some kind of ceremony or whatever if it were to happen. even if it was purely symobolic

Ah admit ah am a bit undecided on this one. :S

Really. Its a silly question. The loyalist people don't want a United Ireland. Thread finished.

is she not the 'commander' of the force that invaded, pillaged, and occupied our country for many years. i would say she has a lot to apologise for.

She's definitely not welcome, just like Tony Blair wasn't, she's the head of state of an imperialist nation. I'm sure she'll get a fantastic welcome though. "Deference" as Vincent just talked about.

It always makes me laugh when Irish republicans think the island belongs to them. Very amusing.

If she comes over and apologizes that would prevent me from taking to the streets, anything less is an insult and a total waste of cash.

the loyalist people wont have a choice in the matter, was it not part of the agreement that if there was a referendum in the north to decide the faith of said, then that would be the outcome. and as far as im aware the ratio of nationalists to unionists is ever increasing on the nationalist side. draw your own conclusions..

You said the Queen should hand the 'north back'. Not about a boarder poll. Odd thread indeed.

we alredy established that she cant 'hand over' the six counties, a referendum would probably be the most likely scenario. i then made reference to her being a symbolic figure in whatever way it was 'handed over'

    keep up will ye!!

Then change your thread title. Its as if you want her to apologise and to then hand over the 6 counties of Northern Ireland into a republic which deserves a place in the pipe dream cabinet along with a United Ireland.

Exactly. Like 40 years ago the catholic priests encouraged the adults to have as many kids as possible to achieve just this. Talk about foresight. The gap is closing extremely quickly. IMO, a reunited Ireland is less than 10 years away...

hopefully.. i actually think if that referendum was held in say five years we would see it then

To be honest, an apology from 'the Queen' would be utterly meaningless at this stage given the passage of time since her predecessors had any real influence in Irish affairs; though it might tiddle the balls of the Wolfe Tones' fans.

Living in the real world for a moment; do you honestly think that this bankrupt 'republic' could finance the social welfare, security etc., etc. in the 'wee North' should it ever befall us to undertake that burden? - The 'North' and bordering counties would descend into a completely lawless region and I guarantee that within one year of the Brits giving us back the 'teddy's head' we would have the UN forces in trying to keep law and order. Doesn't even bear thinking about!

So, to be honest, I couldn't give a rat's arse if the Queen spent a dirty weekend in Temple Bar, or wherever, as long as it didn't cost me (a fleeced taxpayer) a feckin' cent!

We only left the Commonwealth in 1949, and in practical terms diplomatically and politically speaking (and in quite practical terms, whether the Joe unionist or republican recognises it or not) for all intents and purposes we remain in the Commonwealth in all but name.

If I was from the north, loyalist/republican/catholic/protestant, I really dont think I would be happy being governed from dublin..

Unless she's coming over to return the rest of ulster she may as well stay away as it's not safe for her regardless of how much she thinks we've progressed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,455 ✭✭✭✭Monty Burnz

I'd welcome her anyway. Some folks need to get their heads out of the 17th century.

A visit by the queen is something we don't need, at least not until this country get's back on it's feet. For one thing, the security cost's would be horrendous. And what if something did go wrong ? We would end up losing out due to negative publicity as well.
It seem's that overall the dissadent groups are a fairly inept bunch of cretins, but i'd bet there are a few in those groups who would happily spend the rest of their live's behind bars, if they could go down in history as the person who assassinated the queen in Dublin.

Are you actually going to add something to the thread?

    Jack Straw:

"Moreover, it is difficult to see how the UK could remain united. The outcome of a break-up of the union would be calamitous.

The United Kingdom - Great Britain and Northern Ireland - is a union which works to the equal benefit of all four nations of the union. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Historically, England called the shots to achieve a union because the union was seen as a way, among others things, of amplifying England's power worldwide.

And the reverse would certainly be true. A broken-up United Kingdom would not be in the interests of Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, but especially not England.

Our voting power in the European Union would diminish. We'd slip down in the world league GDP tables. Our case for staying in the G8 would diminish and there could easily be an assault on our permanent seat in the UN Security Council."

By getting the thread back on topic and putting across the argument many would use in the UK against a United Ireland. Back on topic. Thanks.

I wouldn't welcome any member of any "royal family." I'd be embarassed if I lived in a country which still recognised so-called "royalty" in the 21st century. Kick them out of their palace and turn it into a museum. Who still believes in monarchies and the divine right of Kings?! That nonsense belongs in the middle ages.

You aren't making much sense. Have you read the title of this thread? Again, it went from that to about breeding, so I thought I would follow that trend.
