I've installed a new "silent" fan but it's spinning at 2800 RPM constantly and is deafeningly loud.

(I also have a thread on this here but I think I might need to sort this via the OS.

I've run sensors and then tried to run pwmconfig as root but get this error:
/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

I'm not sure how to get around this or what other info I can add.

Motherboard is an Asus M4A78LT-M LE Matx

    Sensors gives:
    k10temp-pci-00c3
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1: +0.0°C (high = +70.0°C, crit = +99.5°C)

    atk0110-acpi-0
    Adapter: ACPI interface
    Vcore Voltage: +1.06 V (min = +0.85 V, max = +1.60 V)
    +3.3 Voltage: +3.30 V (min = +2.97 V, max = +3.63 V)
    +5 Voltage: +5.07 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)
    +12 Voltage: +11.86 V (min = +10.20 V, max = +13.80 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 2766 RPM (min = 600 RPM)
CHASSIS FAN Speed:2766 RPM (min = 600 RPM)
    CPU Temperature: +29.0°C (high = +60.0°C, crit = +95.0°C)
    MB Temperature: +29.0°C (high = +45.0°C, crit = +75.0°C)

Fuhgeddaboutit - I shoulda paid more attention the last couple of times in the BIOS. Using the down arrow helps find lots of useful options such as smart fan control (so useful you'd wonder why it's not on by default).

It's a "failsafe" option. It'd be useful in 99% of cases to have it on by default...but that other 1% may result in hardware failure. :)

I saw the 2nd post first and thought "asus". :D

Sorry to hijack pickarooney, but seeing that you have it solved, maybe you won't mind.
I just got a version of that Mobo, a Gigabyte GA-MA78LMT, and I can only get stereo out of the on-board sound. Did surround sound work out of the box for you, and if so what distro are you using?

I only have a 2.1 speaker system myself so I can't say for sure unfortunately. I regularly get problems playing back mkv files recorded in 5.1 audio though, regardless of the hardware, and have never found a workaround in linux for that.

It might be best to ask this thread to be split so others will see your question.

I got it semi-solved. I think it was the latest kernel update that solved it, but I also uninstalled pulse-audio so that could be involved. Only have 5.1 now and the upmixing sounds a bit echoey, but I've more pressing problems to solve now... At least I have a bit of bass now.

Fair point, I wasn't even planning on posting this question, it's just that your mobo number jumped out at me while I was reading this thread.
