Apple have stopped selling MobileMe retail boxes on their website and with new Macs. It looks like the the long expected overhaul with a free service (making use of that massive data centre they've been building in North Carolina) will be launched on March 5.

The are removing retail boxes of most of their applications as all these will be bought through the Mac AppStore.

While I would welcome Free mobile me I believe the AppStore is the more likely reason for the removal of the retail boxes rather than the fact it is going free.

MobileMe isn't an application though. All the box contains is an activation code. They wouldn't be selling it on the Mac Store. And as I said, they've stopped selling it with new Macs as well. MobileMe is completely gone from their online store, so there's definitely a change afoot. They aren't necessarily making it free, but that huge data centre in North Carolina ain't for nothing.

If it goes free, any unused subscription-time will be refunded...

It's unlikely to go completely free. A paid option (with features/storage worth paying for and no ads) may remain.

Did mobileme not turn subscription free recently? With iOS update of 4.2?

No, just the Find My Phone feature.

Alright, so the current speculation suggests that Apple's overhauled MobileMe will offer cloud storage for iTunes purchases and possibly other things as well, along with general cloud services. Whether it's going to be free or not is up in the air, but I find it hard to believe that Apple won't offer some part of it for free as they've started to do with the Find My Phone feature. But even so, they're certain to continue charging for extra storage, etc.

Any final thoughts on this before tomorrow? A free email for all Mac/iPhone owners would be nice. They never should have taken that away imo. But any cloud service would have to be pretty good to drag me away from DropBox.

They will probably offer free Cloud storage to any Song or Video you purchase on iTunes, but will require a subscription of some sort to upload your own music/videos.
