Here's the deal. I'm invited to the 40th birthday of a family friend. Only thing is I don't know her very well unlike my mother and stepfather yet I'm expected to bring a gift. My budget was originally €20 (Avon catalogue ftw) but now I have to splash out around €60 on a gift fo someone I barely know.

I would've posted this in tLL but the answers here are usually more creative.

Go to the bank and get the €60 changed into 2 cent coins, then put it in a shoe box.

Seriously who sets a budget on their birthday presents? I don't buy my closest friends presents never mind a family friend. If someone told me I had to spend a certain amount on them then I wouldn't even bother turning up.

Someone I know recently got told by the bride to be that she is expecting £200 cash from everyone as a wedding present, they advised everyone that they only wanted cash and no presents.
