Tyres - Toyo V Hankook

I'm a fan of Toyo Proxes 4, savage grip in dry and wet weather, not the longest lasting but you will get a decent amount of mileage off them

    Heard good reports about Hankook.
I will be fitting them to my vRS octy when the time comes.

    Whereabouts are you based?
My local fitter can supply/fit Hankook's for less than Eiretyres/Camskill can supply for

Based in Limerick City, would be interested in getting a price off your fella if you can forward his details (may save me the grief of finding a fitter). From uk, they're working out at €66 per tyre (ex VAT) + fitting.

    He is in Fermoy,
Would that be a bit far for you?

Had Toyo Proxes before, very good tyre with excellent grip but because they are a soft compound they wear quickly. They might not last long on the front of a Celica.

    No experience of Hankook.

Some of the fitters charge plenty to fit tyres bought elsewhere, I've seen €20 per tyre quoted. That being the case, you could try the two tyre places near Raheen, one beside Caseys the other opposite where the Peugeot garage used to be. Both of those places were competitive enough last time I had to purchase, but both vary on price depending on tyre size, so you never can tell unless you ring them!
Worth a phone call each anyway. The place opposite the Peugeot garage has a few different brands - Bridgestone, Continental, Hankook, Semperit, Toyo, etc, but I guess like anything you'll only get a really good price if they're selling plentiful in your particular size.

Tried the place next to Caseys, they tried to sell me Nankrangs (only ones in my size), I asked if they had any other named brands was told they'd call me back, still waiting for the call!! Doing alot of travelling at the moment so buying online and getting them fitted when I get a chance is less hassle than ordering through a fitter. There's a place in Roxboro, next to the credit union, who is supposed to be reasonable for fitting.

Thanks for the input fom everyone, now off to find the wifes credit card...:D

Savage grip?? in comparison to what?? Ive got the Toyo T1-R (next one up from the PX4) While the are a brilliant budget tyre, they dont have amazing grip. In my opinion the sidewall flex is a bit much imo, though i will say the grip is very progressive which is good.

I would try the Hankooks if it was me out of the 2 , are Eagle F1 Asymmetric in your price range??

F1's, most definitely not in my price range. How much would u expect to pay to have your wheels balanced?

im not 100% ive only ever had to get them done while getting tyres fitted, which i normally pay 10 euro a tyre.

Sorry about the F1s i only really know my range of tyres 195/50/15

you have a VRS Octavia? any good? petrol or diesel? im considering getting a petrol one, but i wouldnt touch a diesel one

I have Hankook V12s on my 350z. Excellent tyre. Really have to push hard to break the rear away. Wet performance is good too. Although, I tend not to explore the limits of grip in the wet too often.

A good mid budget tyre IMHO.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

I've also got the Hankook ventus s1 evo's on the 350gt and find them excellent, every bit as good on the road as the factory Potenza re050's. Another set of same will be going on shortly.

Try Kieran in Limerick Tyre Centre, in Fenton's Yard right across the road from Kilroy's garage. He ordered tyres for me there last year that he normally didn't stock at a competitive price. Prior to that he only charged me €10 a corner to fit tyres I had bought online. Mid West Tyres across the road wanted €25 a corner.

    I have indeed.
    Bought it new last october
    Loving every minute of it.
CR170 diesel, averaging 43 mpg ( not sparing it) Did spare it like a nun one week and averaged 57mpg..

Nothing wrong with the diesel one..
Nothing wrong with the petrol one onlywith my driving style i would be robbed blind on petrol
All going well i will be replacing it with a new one of the same in late 2012 or new year 2013.. If a new model comes along in '13 then I may hold of for that.

    Back on topic
I have the Potenza re050's and am happy with the wet/dry
Hoping the hankooks will equal/better them

Mate of mine got some TR-1s and thought they were ****e too. He had a drive of my car and thought the PX-4s were very good. They have served me well in all conditions, including torrential rain and mild frost.

i never said they were ****e :D, i used them on the rear of my car on the Nurburgring with Toyo R888`s up front and bar the soft side way i enjoyed that setup, the only 2 Toyos worth talking about when it comes to grip are R888`s and the new R1-R, the rest imo are good for what they are a decent budget tyre, thats coming from someone who currently has 4 on his car, at 29 pound a tyre nothing can match the T1-R for everyday driving, i just know their limits. Another good thing about the Toyos is they seems to wear very well, mine have seen a track day, a trek across europe for a few laps of the ring and over a year of normal driving and they are still fine

The only way you'll better the Potenzas are if you go for something like Michelin Pilot Sport or Continental Sport Contacts.
Potenza re050 is a premium tyre(and better in the wet than the other two mentioned on my car), you won't get the same grip, performance or comfort with Hankooks or Toyos or Falkens.

    Results taken from Tyretest

    Lower numbers = better results

    Potenza
    Grip in dry conditions 1.6
    Breaking in dry conditions 1.6
    Grip in wet conditions 2.2
    Braking in wet conditions 2.3
    Grip in snow 4.0
    Driving comfort 2.4
    Internal noise level 2.6
    Exterior noise levels 2.5
    Tyre wear 2.7
    Kilometres driven 20.125

    Pilots

    Grip in dry conditions 1.4
    Breaking in dry conditions 1.4
    Grip in wet conditions 1.7
    Braking in wet conditions 1.8
    Grip in snow 4.1
    Driving comfort 1.8
    Internal noise level 1.7
    Exterior noise levels 1.7
    Tyre wear 2.3
    Kilometres driven 16.458

    Continentals
    Grip in dry conditions 1.6
    Breaking in dry conditions 1.7
    Grip in wet conditions 2.6
    Braking in wet conditions 2.6
    Grip in snow 4.4
    Driving comfort 2.4
    Internal noise level 2.4
    Exterior noise levels 2.4
    Tyre wear 2.5
    Kilometres driven 24.73

    Hankook

    Grip in dry conditions 1.5
    Breaking in dry conditions 1.6
    Grip in wet conditions 2.1
    Braking in wet conditions 2.2
    Grip in snow 3.3
    Driving comfort 1.9
    Internal noise level 1.9
    Exterior noise levels 2.0
    Tyre wear 2.5
    Kilometres driven 11.139

    Judging from the above tests
    Pilots came out top
    Hankook 2nd
    Potenzo 3rd
    Conti's 4th

So I guess that Hankook's look as though the will in fact give me better grip especially in the wet than the potenzas ;)

That's great, but that's just a survey of people on the internet :pac:

http://www.adac.de/infotestrat/tests/reifen/sommerreifen/2010_Sommerreifen_Test_225_45_R17.aspx would be slightly better evidence, as it's actual comparative testing.

Didnt realise that as lots of people use it as a reference :P

Yup! Also run by the same guys who own eiretyres afaik(Delticom AG).

It's really hard to find actual tyre reviews online, only ADAC ever really seem to do it.

It does translate the page but not the wording on the top of the tyre test.. I dont know what each number corresponds to if you get my drift.

OP here, decided to go with the hankooks. Cheers for the input everyone, for anyone thinking of buying some online theres a big price difference between eiretyres(€116) & camskill(£61)....

Have a look at the Toyo R888 or Toyo R1-R the only bridgestone ive used that are better were the Potenza RE01-R ,without doubt the best tyre ive ever used maybe with an exception to their wet weather characteristics. only problem is they are now discontinued  so my search goes on but the R888`s are a decent second.

Can only seem to get t1-r's in my size. All the new extreme performance potenzas seem to be large sizes only(like the s001). Happy enough with re050a's, though I'm not positive there's been much of a performance improvement over re040's

Nankangs are like glue and seem to wear well. However my car has quattro and esp so it probably doesnt matter what you put on it. I think they are quite a bit cheaper than toyos or hankook.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I use the T1-R's on my car, they seem to be a good option in 15 inch without breaking the bank. The car had Goddyear Eagle NCT5's on it when I bought it and for my car they were rubbish.

Hopefully I'll have the time to get a set of R888's on today though, she has a date with the track on Monday :)

I'm on my second et of hankook evos.. great tyre for the price. good grip in both wet and dry condition. also had them on for the snow and had no problems getting anywhere. there was continental port contact 3 on the car when i got it. great grip also but the difference in price dose not come close to matching the difference in performance. sport contact 3 were twice the price of the hankooks

:eek:Nankangs are renowned for how little grip they have.. relying solely on your quattro and esp could end in tears some day.

Quattro does little to help when braking hard in the heavy rain :o

When I had my old W124 I needed tires to get it past the NCT, the famous Francis Melia of Clonboo tires told me they were utter muck and that he wouldn't sell them to me or anyone else, he didn't have any tire in the required size in stock anyway so he had to order them in. In fairness though some folks do swear by them in the dry.

The only people I ever heard swearing by Nankangs are the twin cam brigade. For no other reason then they are so hard they last for ages when doing donuts!

Where can you get T1-R's for £29?

I have 205-50-15's on my car, find them very good. Grip is great, good in the wet and not too costly, although I paid £46 a pop from Camskill.
