Sorry dave for not answering you on this. Usually this can be a couple of different and yet simple things. If it happens again just ask

No problem thanks for the reply.

Had to buy whole new unit. From the screw in piece at the bottom that connects to copper pipes going into cistern.

Turns out no one stocks the type i had in it first day.So parts can't be bought.Man said he never seen set a set up.
The arm short on the original so ballcock can fit in.I bought a replacement one but arm was too long.Thankfully fella in shop took it back so i could try another type which did work but was hard to set up right due to lack of space. If i got it in right i would have a drip out of bottom of cistern cause i had to release screw in part slightly to adjust arm.
Very awkward job.Got i done eventually

Have 2nd toilet that same problem is happening in but if i remove the part at the top.So that i can stick a pencil inside and move a red part inside water flows freely.

I'll try and get a picture up

Sorry should point out my 1st problem was water dripping out taking hours to fill, and i removed the part the ball cock screws onto(sorry for last of correct part names)

This the old set up both upstairs toilets bathroom ensuite have these

Had to buy whole new unit. From the screw in piece at the bottom that connects to copper pipes going into cistern. This is not unusual. So your quite normal. How much did you pay out of curiosity.

Turns out no one stocks the type i had in it first day.So parts can't be bought.Man said he never seen set a set up. Man sounds daft. I am in the business years and i have not seen them all either. But they all roughly work the same. On the goldilocks principle. Some are too short some are too long and some are just right.

Both sets ups in these pictures look fine the bottom set up is a common retrofit.

Well done you prob saved yourself 120 euro

Thanks Retrofit one cost i think 18-20 euro i had to buy another few things when i bought it.

This is the part i'm on about (taken from old one that supposedly can't be replaced)
The arm of the ballcock screws into to the left

    This is taken apart

Finally this is what i'm on about when i speak of the pencil.
I stick pencil inside the hole on top and push the red thing forward water flows freely out the top.Once i take pencil out water returns to dripping.

Thats not normaly replaced. You just buy the whole arm. As you have done. Thats why the chap looked at you strange so.

Its not replaced prob because the whole arm is so cheap.

ususally small particles of dirt keep the valve open. I've found that to me the main cause.
