I'd say it has more to do with Xtravision's own computer system than anything else.

The guys behind the counter could be your brother/sister/mother/husband but if the computer registered the fact that you haven't made 8 film rentals, it won't allow you rent a game.

As Little Britain taught us, "computer says no". :D I'd say Xtravision staffs hands are tied.

If you're that peeved, make a complaint to Xtravision head office maybe?

I used to work in Xtra-Vision when the PS3 first came out. If anyone opened a new account and wanted to rent a PS3 or 360 game they had to make a certain number of movie rentals first or else they could pay €50 onto their account as credit for renting them. It was nothing to do with the computer system, there was just a tonne of the games being stolen. We still let people we knew do it. In saying that, I know that they've gotten a new computer system in since (the old one was like teletext)

I set up a new account too recently, late November / early December and something in the back of my mind was telling me that I'd have to rent dvd's before being allowed to get a game.

Same as you, I had ID and such, and once the account was created I walked over and picked up a game. I was waiting for the guy to tell me about this dvd rule, but he never, just asked for the rental price of the game.

I think like a previous poster said, it's nothing to do with the computer systems. Just down to the employee to impose the rule!

Cool thanks for the answers yeah it just depends on the employee

its down to each store...each store has rules depending on history of games been stolen etc.. the rules are outlined by headoffice but it would be the manager who would decide what are thje rules...some stores ask for 5 rents others for 10 rents others ask for deposit etc...

This 100% - simply to prevent someone signing up for free and stealing an expensive game with their first rental.

True but you can't pay in cash, you have to use a card payment method which doesn't suit everyone

And the card acts as a deposit as it can be charged if the game is not returned (be that as a penalty or continued monthly rental) I can understand Xtravisions reluctance to let first time renters have games in some circumstances.

As can I, very easy for them to get ripped off otherwise
It makes perfect sense for them to want to protect their stock

I see their concerns but I think a deposit system would be much fairer. I used to rent the odd game but would have no interest in renting movies so would be put off if I didn't already have an account.
The cynic in me though can see that 8 movie rentals may be more profitable than a deposit system if most people go through with it.

My local Xtravision is on the opposite scale of security to the OPs. I went in and rented a game (Portal 2) having not rented anything in long over a year. I hadn't my card but said I'd chance it. Gave my name address and home phone number at the counter and not only did i get the game but a new membership card too! I was shocked.

Wait a minute, they just gave you a membership card even though you presented no ID whatsoever? This can't be right can it? No company could be that careless could they? Maybe the store in question should be reported to head office, I can't see that being allowed the fly. Does this mean I can walk down to my local branch and give a friends details and get a card?

Yep. I can't really complain though. I wanted the thing and they gave me it. would be a bit much then to go and report them. I got the card and one of them key things too (like the clubcards).
I just must have a trusting face :D My bank card broke in half before and I brought it in to the bank and explained to the woman behind the counter and same thing, name and address and she got a new one issued and let me take out 50 euro (no ID asked for).
