I feel really deflated after yesterday. The things I've read ,online and offline, and heard regarding SSM and lgbt people in general have genuinely disturbed me.

    Group hug?
    :(

you know that noise that goes *mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm* while you hug someone tightly as you shake them left and right?

    Well yeah.

Ah why not. Not like any harm can come from a hug.

I think it essentially has to do with (and OP, correct me if you were referring to something else!) Fine Gael's equality spokesperson, Lucinda Creighton, sharing her thoughts on marriage...
Creighton said she believed the main purpose of marriage was to “propagate & create environment for children to grow up”, so while she believes that gay couples should be treated “fairly and justly” in matters such as tax and inheritance – marriage is “different”.
    http://www.thejournal.ie/poll-do-you-agree-with-lucinda-creightons-comments-on-marriage-2011-2/

And other instances of Fine Gael removing comments, questions, and barring users from their public Facebook page (where they invite questions and comments from the public) for discussing or questioning the issue.

Basically, our most likely next government seems to have zero intention of even entertaining the notion that we be treated as equal citizens with regards love and family life. And that's just 'not a major issue' for most people. :(:(:(

    ***hugs***

Sorry, Funkfield, but I spend 12-14 hours a day in a library doing a PhD. I purposefully don't look at news or many sites during that time so I don't distract myself too much. I also don't watch tv when I get home I tend to go straight to bed.

Anyway, I had a brief look and found what I presume people are talking about. Cheers.

Sorry, you misunderstood or i did it wrong.

I was seconding your question. I wanted to know what happened.

    Thanks Goodshape.

    Bad zoegh.

What an ironic job title. Creighton is the candidate in my constituency as well. Trust me, she won't be getting a little number next to her name.

Well, maybe Labour will get in beside them and maybe they'll push the issue, or maybe all the statistics are completely wrong, its as likely as me winning the euromillions without buying a ticket but heck there's always hope, I'm not getting myself hung up on this before all facts are finalised.

Is this group hug still going? Yes???

    *jumps in*

Awwh - you are such wonderful people. :)

Regardless of what the Creightons of this world say, we know who we are, we know what we are, and we know that they are wrong. And, those that truly know us also know that they are wrong. We are loved, and our powerful love has even been known to defeat bigotry and prejudice.

I'm back from the trans wellbeing day in Waterford. I think there is one speaker that everyone is talking about. Her son came to her some time ago and told her that, actually, she is her daughter. The mother gave a moving speech about the journey she had to make to put into effect the unconditional love she has for her children.

At the end of it, she said that she feels blessed to have a daughter like that, and that she is very proud of her. And, she expressed her admiration for all of us for whom the simplest things (like going to the shop to get a litre of milk while presenting in your true gender, or going up the street holding the hand of your beloved) can be very difficult.

    *big group hug*

Oh, and Dee went for her first swim! :) In the sea!!! Yup - it was that kind of day!!! :D

Yup, but FF and Green seats in the same constituency got converted into Labour seats, including a brand new TD - Kevin Humphreys. I believe Humphreys is particularly LGBT friendly.

The interesting fight is in Dun Laoghaire. Ivana Bacik looks like she is going to lose, unfortunately. However, she is going to lose to either Mary Hanafin or Richard Boyd Barret.

It's worth pointing out that her running mate, Eoghan Murphy, was elected too and he is in favour of same sex marriage - see here http://www.eoghanmurphy.ie/2011/02/24/same-sex-marriage-statement/

Delighted that Ireland's first openly gay TD was elected in Meath East (Dominic Hannigan). He topped to the poll, too!
Quite a change for Meath to go from total FF domination to 0 FF TD's in the space of 4 years.

    Chin up everyone!!

While I dont support Lucinda Creighton or particularly Fine Gael in general, I have to say I'm appalled by the attacks against Creighton (not from you folk here) but some of the messages on Facebook, and even texts and calls to her.

Some examples: "You are a ****ing bitch", "disgusting human being" etc.

I find it sad that double standards exist in the LGB world, where attacks to LGB ideals are considered vile, yet attacks to a heterosexual who holds a different view to you are ok.

Now I would understand the outrage if Creighton was treating gay/bisexuals as second class citizens, or being abusive or whatever. But she fully supports civil partnership. In fact, doesn't she want to go further and amend the act to make sure same sex couples get all the same rights as heterosexual couples?

She is a member of Fine Gael - a centre right predominantly Christian party. And is entitled to her views.

You don't quite seem to understand, she is completely oblivious to reality, pawning off the same disgusting featherweight excuses for blatant prejudice. Sure I'm not going to run off and curse at her from a public platform, that kind of carry on only makes everyone look bad in the end, but I sure as hell would support a lobby re-educating her. You made a point not to group us in with those attacking her, kindly understand that those who deem screaming obscenities at a public official to be an acceptable way to get views across are certainly not the majority of people who just so happen to fall under the LGBT bracket. Generalising is a big no no.

Her views do put LGBT people on a less than level standing. The fact that that is so okay she got elected quite saddens me, once more she is supposed to speak for equality, that is bloody well disgusting, whether you see it or not, time will make a fool out of her.

I call bull**** here - I've never seen anyone condoning the people who call her a bitch - I've only heard a minority of LGBT people attacking and insulting her and most LGBT I know do not support personalised insults

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

She's entitled to her views, but when her views greatly contrast with the principles on which the position of "Minister for Equality" are built, then she should not be given that portfolio.

I don't condone personal insults thrown at her; calling her a "bitch" or whatever does no-one any favours.* You'll always have internet warriors who'll just throw out personal abuse without attacking her policies. But most decent and sane people criticising Creighton are doing so based on her abhorrent views, and that's to be welcomed.

I'd have no problem if Creighton was made Minister for the Environment or Transport or something where her views on gay marriage and LGBT rights are irrelevant. But she should have the equality portfolio taken off her immediately.

*I retain the right to call her a "cretin" though. Just because juxtaposing it with her surname works on so many levels. :pac:

There was no double standard, who exactly said "yeah it's great that they are defaming/insulting Lucinda Creighton, serves her right!"? People have a problem with the way she handled herself during this "debacle", not with her on a personal level.
