well, torrents and downloading in general is fine and above board provided what you are downloading is free and freely distributable.

any other kind of downloading shouldn't be discussed here.

You're very vague about what you want to do - supply some details and maybe somebody can help.

What is it you want to download?

If you don't want to use a torrent client, then I assume it's not a torrent you want access to. Typically any browser works pretty well for non-torrent/p2p downloads.

All Mac p2p applications are crap, but give Acquisition a go I suppose. But that won't really solve your problem.

If you want to download stuff, get a download manager (Speed Download, iGetter, etc). And maybe a subscription to a newsgroup provider (Easynews, Giganews, etc) as they offer very fast speeds.

Best download manager out there by far is jdownloader :D

Copy http links and jdownloader downloads them automagically.

As to where to get the links to download, well google is your friend, and it shouldnt be discussed further here :pac:

Has uTorrent for Mac improved much?

sabnzb is all you need. Has some nice third party tools that make using it so easy. You'll look back and wonder why you ever considered using torrents!

    +2 for Transmission

For downloading other things, I like Speed Download
    Around 25 dollars to buy

Works ok for me. Not a huge fan but it is functional. Must give Transmission a go, only went for uTorrent due to Windows days loyalty.

transmission is the job for torrents on mac but you specifically said you dont want to use torrents

so try rapidshare or megashares or one of those sites and then install flashget and speeddownload. this is what i did for years before getting into a few private torrent sites were people actually seed
