Provisional License process

    hi

my friend is thinking to do a theory test, and get a provisional license for the 1st time. i read smthg about after 4th of april 2011, u have to do 12 hrs lesson with a driving instructor? so, my question is how long does it take from taking theory test to getting the provisional license?

say he takes theory test within 1st of 2nd week of march, (providing he passes), will he have time to get a license before 4 april? what are the required documents to apply for provisional license?

he is not working at the moment, he is on a really tight budget, id like to help him save as much as possible. theory test 40 euro, eye test 15/25 euro, license 15 euro, etc. if he has to do lesson for 12 hrs, its going to kill his finance. at the same time being able to drive will increase his chance of getting a job.

    thx

He should do his own research, the lazy git. Imagine when he has to learn all th rules of the road! Also it's now a Learner's Permit, it is no longer a provisional licence.

Before he goes to do the theory test, he should go to the tax office and pick up a learner permit application form. I think you can order it online, but since the new ones came out I haven't seen a downloadable one.

So while he's waiting for the test he can complete the application form.

He needs an eye sight report to accompany the first application for a permit.
He needs 2 passport photos signed on the back.
Both of these can be obtained before the theory test is sat.

Once he gets the cert to prove he has passed the theory test, he can take this with the application form, photos and eyesight report and go to the tax office for the permit. (€15 I think). There is nothing to stop him going straight from the theory test centre to the queue in the tax office for a permit. So transport time + queue time + about 5 mins to make up the permit.

    thx for the quick reply.

my friend has booked for a theory test, soonest he could get is 16 march. he phoned local motor tax office asking 2 questions:
    1. how long is the process for learners permit?
6 - 8 weeks (based on the volume of application right now, so say hello to 4 april)

    2. would i be exempted from the 4 april new regulation if i applied for a learners permit before 4
april or only when i have the actual learners permit in hand before 4 april.
reply; we dont really know much about it, we havent been fully informed so we cant answer
    ur query right now.

honest to god, i was gobsmacked when i heard this. still, at least they didnt tell porkies to get him off the ph.

sometimes i think its pointless phoning them offices. as ill get more helpful answer from u guys here.

if there isnt time for him to get learnes permit bfor 4 april, he just has to cancel the theory test because theres no way he can afford the 12 lessons.

    share opnion pls?

If it helps, it can be done in less than a week, I did my theory test in drogheda on saturday eye test on tuesday then straight to the tax office which almost empty for a change, and have my learners permit since this morning so all done in 6 days so it can be done that quickly if needed and of course if you pass the theory test.

you can get it from the garda station or library

no you cant get it on the day unless you're very lucky, but it's not common AFAIK, takes around a week usually, but there may be a serious backlog with the new regs.

    Hi Hope this helps..

I did my theory test on Monday the 14.. passed thank god!! Got all the necessary documents together & went to the Motor Tax office on the tuesday - there are new regulations now for the eye test so alot of the opticians dont have the necessary equipment so make sure your friends makes an appt before hand..
Was told up to 10 working days for learners permit to be issued - money came out of my account yest for it so should be here on Monday - once documents are submitted prior to April new rule wont apply

apologies for going off OP's question but my missus is in the same boat..

she has passed the theory test but just need to apply for the licence.. she did the theory in dublin, can she apply for the licence in wexford (My main house residence address is there if it makes any difference)??

Also checking dublin city council, it says to medical report will be required if You answer ‘Yes’ to any of the medical questions on Application Form D201. She will be getting an eye test report.. but from the form D201 I found, under health and fitness questionaire, it asked whether the applicant wear glasses/spec.. does that 'yes' means she;ll need to do a medical..??

Doesn't seem to make sense considering the eye test report and that it wasn't specified in note J of form D201..

    Anyone can share some comment?

Just make sure she books the eyesight test.. new provisions in place now & ALOT of opticians dont have the machine necessary( cost me €40 to have my eye test done for it) Would advise that she apply ASAP for the prov licence as new rules coming in on April 1st.

I'd imagine specsavers should have the necessary equipment. So what is the deal with the new rules? If someone had the documentation submitted this week, could they get caught with new rules because of a delay in processing the docs? or is it down to when the docs are submitted?

Ash: You do need an eye test. You don't generally need a medical unless their is some specific condition to be recorded. Specsavers or local Opt. will do.
Deigo: Possibly. I would recommed people go to their local tax office directly.
