Did anyone else have problems with <snip> fuel last Friday 18th February. My car was working perfectly before I filled up. I managed to drive home without a problem but car wouldn't start the next day....will take at least a week to sort it out and I shudder to think at what cost??

    It's not the petrol mate

Get a mechanic to look at it

This IS the mechanic's opion after stripping the engine.

    Get a differemt mechanic

This mechanic is undisputedly the best mechanic in my area. Others go to him to help solve their problems. There is petrol in the engine, and before you jump to any conclusions, I went back to said petrol station and viewed their CCTV footage of me filling my car from the DIESEL pump.

Ok, next question. Did you put that petrol in the tank, or the engine?

    I would appreciate helpful comments.

    Is it a diesel car?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

Why would it take a week to sort? If its a diesel car and you filled with petrol(your fault or not) it not the same as filling a petrol car with diesel.

Just drain the tank and refill with diesel, change the fuel filter and away you go. A couple of hours work max.

In fairness I did see a Korando that internal engine damage from being driven when full of petrol.

So you're saying that the station put petrol in the diesel tank? That's not a "bad fuel" question, that's the garage fecking up.
Are you planing for a court case and need others with the same diesel/petrol issue as you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

Can you tell us exactly what the mechanic said the issue was after stripping the engine?

Can you confirm (because I may have misunderstood it) that what you're suggesting is that you used the diesel pump to fill your diesel car, and that your mechanic says there's petrol in it - i.e. the diesel tanks in the garage contained petrol?

What were the symptoms with it not starting? Any lights on the dash? Did it turn over?

What make, model & year is your car?

If it's a busy station, and petrol was loaded into the site's diesel tank, then there would be cars dropping all over the place.

I saw it happen at a station in galway before. It was on the local news and dozens of cars were affected.

iirc you cannot fill the wrong tanks.... Different hose nossles

Would that not depend on how old the car is?

I meant from the tanker to the station...

very strange story, if petrol came out of a diesel pump many more people would have problems ,the other factors involved are the state of you engine beforehand , how much petrol went in to you tank ,if it was pure petrol it was running on, how far you drove etc, the diesel pump would be damaged by prolonged use of petrol as the pump needs the lubrication from diesel ,if it was pure petrol it would not run perfectly im sure the petrol is more explosive so maybe your diesel pump was on its last legs and the petrol finished it off but if you can prove that petrol came out of a pump marked diesel then the garage has to fix your car

This would have been my understanding of it.

Also if the station was dispensing the wrong fuel then the side of the road outside would have been littered with broken down cars.

I'm not comfortable with the name of the station being muddied here without proof so I'm going to remove it

I'm not 100% sure, but I was on site during an incident in galway. I think the tanker has one nozzle, and a switch that allows it to dispense either diesel or petrol from one large segmented tank.

As above, OP wouldn't be the only car affected.

No way, there are four seperate hoses that attach to each seperate tanker

Are those hoses all fitted with the same connector maybe?

yeah, you cant put diesel in a petrol, but you can put petrol in a diesel because the diesel nozzle is bigger than the petrol nozzle.

Sorry but even if there was petrol in the diesel tank at the forecourt, how the hell did you manage to get the car home after filling it up? You'd be lucky to get down the road ffs.

Bring the car to a different mech. That mech might be good at servicing or what not for the locals, but go to some1 else and get a 2nd opinion. I really doubt it was the fault of the station as it wouldn't just be you affected.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7 R.Bryson

That's why I'm here. I'm trying to find out if anyone else WAS affected.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭Yawns

Go into station and ask. Believe me, if a lot of people were affected, the staff would know by now especially as it happened a few days ago. There would be no way for the owner to even hide that it happened.

But I still stand by the fact that if you drove home with no probs whatsoever then it wasn't the station's fuel.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7 R.Bryson

    Thanks. That was helpful.

The reason I could drive home is that there was some fuel already in the car before I filled up and it was that that brought me home.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,565 ✭✭✭✭Tallon

tbh, I was at the station in question earlier and one of the pumps was cordined off with red tape

Go to the garage, ask to speak to the manager, and tell him what happened.

I looked at a diesel taxi a few weeks back when it started misbehaving. The owner said the car was fine until about 15 minutes and 8 miles after it was fuelled, and asked me would I stick the scantool on it as he suspected that the symptoms were similar to previous problems which required an EGR valve change.

Before plugging in, a quick sniff down the fuel tank revealed that there was indeed unleaded in it. Instinctively, the owner ranted and raved that the garage had sold him duff fuel and predicted a legal Armageddon for them! Being a taxi driver though, he kept all his receipts and upon finding the one for that nights fill-up, the receipt proved he had indeed misfueled it himself with petrol. No surprise with that, be he says that the car not getting sick for several miles added to his belief that the problems were not connected with him filling up with the wrong fuel. Thankful for him, he only put €15 of fuel in, and a drain / flush / fuel filter / refill got him motoring again. He was lucky.

Thanks Tallon. What time were you there? Also did you happen to notice which pump?

Apologies to OP if I was wrong too :D

How on earth could they get the wrong fuel into a tank tho? Surely now of course all bills can be sent to the station and they can deal with the supplier if it was their fault.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

It looks like there is not question that the station will be paying. I'm still unsure what is going to take a week to fix though?

Don't worry, the mechanic undisputedly knows what he's doing

Maybe the fuel delivery driver filled up incorrectly at the depot and had petrol in a compartment of the truck when he thought it was diesel?
