Making the most of my Transferable vote?

I want to give my Number 1 and Number 2 to two members of the same party in my constituency. Candidate A is overwhelming favourite to win a seat but Candidate B isn't polling very well at the moment.
Should I give my Number 1 to Candidate B, and my Number 2 to Candidate A, on the basis that if Candidate B is eliminated, my vote will transfer to Candidate A anyway? Am I right in thinking that if Candidate A exceeds the quota then only a sample of his votes will be distributed; these being the difference between his total number of first preferences and the actual quota itself, meaning that my vote may not necessarily transfer to Candidate B?

So should I give my Number 1 to the underdog and my Number 2 to the favourite?

    Thanks for your replies.

Richard Bruton has asked certain elements of his constituency to put his running mate at 1 and himself at 2, for the very reasons you outlined.
