Google Webmasters - Weird Adult Keywords

    Hi Folks,

Investigating this for a friend. Has a domain registered with Google Webmasters. Been going for about 5 years now, nothing untoward and fairly popular on the rankings. During the week he logged into his Webmasters account and noticed pretty "Adult" keywords appearing (The site has zero adult content and has zero connection to adult content)

They were pretty specific keywords and very inappropriate. Doing a quick Google with: site:http://www.domain.com and adding a keyword, they appeared in the results. They don't appear if I just do a normal search within the site e.g. site:http://www.domain.com

I've logged onto the site with my identifier set to a GoogleBot through Firefox. Searching all the source code, there are none of the adult tags there. Not one. Tried with various browsers, none appeared. Its like the meta tags or something were changed as the GoogleBot passed.

Site is fairly secure, running latest WordPress with reputable plugins. SQL DB and WordPress backend are alpha numeric passwords (Which have been changed)

Any ideas? It has me puzzled.

(Please Note: I can't post the domain name for obvious reasons)

Did your friend use a free template? I read an article recently about reputable-looking templates having secret link-backs and words hidden throughout the template. I'll see can I dig the article out.

Its a free template but fairly widely used and seems reputable. I've checked for links and JavaScript but come up with nothing

I think that's your issue just there. As I said, the link backs etc are hidden throughout the template. You wouldn't see the links in your own content, they'd actually be hidden in the template code.

I can't think of anything else it could be, but maybe someone else here has another possible reason?

Can you show us some real examples? If it's not the template issue, sounds like it's a hack of some sort.

Thats what I thought, but I checked the source and the DB. They seem clean. It could be some JS script somewhere but its only recently happened. The sites been online for about 4 years and the new template is in place more than 6 months. These keywords only hit in the last few Bot passes.

I can't post the domain but I'll put up a screenshot when I can.

It's probably because of incoming links.

Is he linked to from link farms?

    Can you PM it?

Even though your files are clean, their might be some hidden script or it could even be the htaccess file redirecting the Googlebot to another location on your server.

So without seeing it, it's very hard to establish what's going on.

No link farms intentionally in place and none found.

I'll post a screenshot in the next few to give an example.

There was a way to check incoming links with Google Webmaster Tools.
