    Need some help.

I am selling my car privately. So add posted in donedeal.ie/ adverts.ie...
I am arranging to meet a guy today for an inspection/ test drive

Once we agree a price, what are the next steps:
I know the issues around cheques/bank drafts and would make sure that I get cash and lodge to a bank to avoid forgeries.

    Thannks a lot.

You have the right idea money wise :)
If he buys it you send off the completed form, don't give it to him. Be nice but be wary of someone viewing a car, not all folks are decent. Be honest with any questions he asks, then once it's gone it's gone so he has no comeback :)

Might be an idea too to ask to bring along some form of proof of insurance too. You may ask to see it if you get a 'bad feeling' about the buyer.

Don't allow a stranger alone with your car and keys in hand.. even for a minute.

Tbh, without sounding obnoxious, but you can kind of judge your prospective buyer in the first few mins.. whether they are a messer or serious.

They will generally bring a second pair of eyes with them, a friend/mechanic, and it is no harm you doing the same.

I always have my brother there in the background as I feel it stops them putting too much pressure on with me and also its a bit of a deterrent for someone pulling a fast one.

Nothing scientific but just what I find useful.

So I need to post the Reg Cert to Shannon right with the name of the new owner and address - right?

I guess a quick letter confirming the sale, dated and signed by both parties is no harm.

Not to make me paranoid but what's the worse that can happen (assuming they have insurance) is that they steal the car?

    Yep :)
That's about it really, it's unlikely really. Anything is possible though. Unless it's an expenive high end valuable car there are far easier ways of stealing one though than robbing one during a test drive, too much potential for things to go wrong so I wouldn't be overly concerned at the risk of it being stolen.

I wouldn't bother with the letter either, just photocopy the signed change of ownership thing before you post it off, that covers you then :)

When a potential buyer arrives for a test drive don't hand them the keys until both of you are sitting in the car. That way there is no chance of them taking off in the car with you still at the road side.

If they agree to buy the car then see if the payment transaction can be done in the bank electronically. I did this when I sold my last car, we both went into the bank, the transaction took a few minutes, as soon as I confirmed the money was in my account I handed them the keys and we both went to a nearby post box and dropped in the signed log book to Shannon.

Remember cash notes can be duds too so if taking payment by cash arrange to meet at your bank were the notes can be checked and lodged into your account. Don't leave this kind of cash at home overnight either.

Thanks I a lot - I will follow that advice about the bank.

Met the guy today - it was fine. Price not as much as I want :(
He does want to meet again tomorrow so I can bring the car to a mechanic friend in Rathmines. Bit of a pain.

    Bummer :(
Just don't budge any lower on it tomorrow regardless of what the mechanic says ;) Stick to your guns, if he wants any more cash off tell him thanks but no thanks.

Only ever got less than I was really happy with for one car, it was small money anyway and only €100 ish less than what I wanted, he was a shrewd character though and I learned a bit from him about how to do a deal too so it was worth it, hard to beat experience :)
