Hi this is not my van but someone i know so i dont know all the ins and outs.

Timeing belt was not due to be done for an other 10K at least and was going to be geting it done at the end of the mouth with a full service as he gets the belt done every so many services if it needs to be done or not as he can not be with out his van.

He got a recon engine put in but the turbo is now gone he thinks the mechanic has messed something up when puting in the engine as the mechanic is saying his turbo must have been gone before his belt snaped.

Could a snaped timeing belt kill a turbo ?

No, the turbo would spin down immediately after the pistons contacted the valves. Probably just a crappy s/h engine.

How long after the recon engine was fitted did the turbo fail?

When he went to pick up the van after the recon engine was put in he was told it was not working but was told the engine was ok.

Yes a snapped timing belt can kill a turbo depending on how much damage was done when piston-valve contact took place, a piece of broken off valve, piston or valve seat etc. could have made its way out the exhaust manifold and into the turbine housing, damaging the vanes on the turbine wheel. It's unusual but it can happen.

This is possible, but i'd be more suspicious of incorrect installation leading to oil starvation to the turbo.

A bit of an update he did get it back it turns out, it is with the mechanic now he got it back Monday drove it Tuesday and it was making a noise like a high pitched sound when driving he rang the mechanic he said it was fine when he was finished with it that he must have done something to it he was told by an other mechanic that it sounded like the turbo.
