I was out on Monday on my Coilte Lett and at about 9.0am I looked across the valley, about a mile off, and saw a herd of deer grazzing in a field. Having not seen any deer on my Lett so far I decided to locate these deer.

So after an hour of driving I found the farm which by road was 6 miles away. I asked the first man about seeing the deer and he told me it would be on his son's farm and directed me to the sons farm. He also told me to shoot away on his farm. :)

A little down the lane I met the son and told him of seeing about 15-20 deer and could I cull a couple out. He said to work away, I showed him my insurance and gave him my name and address and also asked him would he sign a permission to shot letter I had in the car (for the insurance cover). All OK. And OK to shoot next season as well. :)

Because of a fog now across the valley I walked the wrong way 'cos I couldn't see the orignal spot where I had seen the deer herd. So when the fog lifted I was a long way from where the herd was, about turn and found them after another hour of walking through the fields. It turned out they were all bucks so couldn't take a shot but now I know where they are.

So a long stalk/drive and after 3 hours I found the herd and got a new permission for next year. I'll be there next weekend and may then get a shot away.

Photo's off the iPhone from about 400m away, taken at 12.15pm.

Close up of the buck herd, counted 15 bucks, 6 with good nearly full heads on them and the rest knoblers or prickets.

Jesus those pictures are respectable for an iPhone.

Even with no meat in the freezer that is still a good result Clive, well done. Saw some deer, got new permission and spending time doing what you love.

    Great stuff

So happy with the result of the day. My legs still hurt.

I got to within 50/75 yards of the herd but there was a ditch with a stream running in it and a high bank on the herd side of the ditch between me and them. They saw me and slowly headed off back towards the forest. Nice to see and some big lads amonest them.

The iPhone photo's are not bad. I use Adobe Fireworks to add the text, crop and zoom the photo's.

You can just see the forest roadway at the bottom of my Lett from where I first saw the herd and that's a good way off.

He didn't say he wouldn't be taking the let again. Stop taking every opportunity to invoke your crusade against paid shooting. Get over it.

    Nice one Clive.
I was out last week with gentleman Jim and 4gun on a couple of permissions. We all got a deer and we saw loads more. All does and calfs.
And we were talking about how many deer we had seen in so many different locations but no bucks.
So we got up on the last day and went to a spot that I had not much luck on over the past few years but we all had a deer so there was no pressure for an animal.
We pulled up and in the second field edging on a young plantation were about 9 fine bucks and 2 prickets. No does to shoot but an excellent end to our 3 days of shooting. And a good sign for next year.

    [mod hat on]
This is not a debate on paid for versus free shooting. Clive started the thread to discuss a successful trip out hunting. Let's try and respect that

Just to take this point up AND not to get into the if's and why's 'cos this is all I'm going to say on it.

I have had good success on the Lett I now have and will be taking it on again next season. Only for it I would not have got this farm land permission. And hopefully it will lead to more nearby permissions on other farms.

And your the B88L8x that rang me but that didn't spook the deer I managed that myself. :o

I was thinking after it would have killed me to drag one back to the road, I can see the headlines now 'Man found attached by drag rope to a deer, dead but with a big smile on his face'

Nah, it'd go more like "Man found dead in bondage situation with deer. Police and local SPCA are investigating."
