It just appeared in Windows Updates this morning, I just installed myself there after a ccleaner clean and defrag. No major changes.
New Features in Service Pack 1
There’s not a ton of great new stuff in SP1, at least from the perspective of the end user. Here’s the quick list of stuff that might maybe matter to you:

Improved HDMI audio device performance: there’s a small update that helps reliability of HDMI audio devices after rebooting. This is listed as a feature in the release notes, but really feels like a bug fix.
Corrected behavior when printing mixed-orientation XPS documents: If you’re trying to print XPS documents that have landscape and portrait pages in the same document, now they will print correctly. All 5 of you can now rejoice.
Change to behavior of “Restore previous folders at logon” functionality: If you used the “Restore previous folders at logon” feature in Folder Options, the folders would restore into a cascaded set of windows. Now they will restore to where they were.
Support for Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX): supports a newer processor extension that improves performance for floating point intensive applications.
Improved Support for Advanced Format (512e) Storage Devices: hard drive manufacturers are transitioning to a new 4KB physical sector size, and now Windows 7 supports this better.

There’s a lot of other bugfixes and security fixes, but these are the most notable ones according to Microsoft’s documentation.

    Any performance stats between W7 & W7 SP1?

haven't noticed any change in performance tbh. Creating new folders though, it goes a little weird now!

Haven't noticed any differences in performance, but my home and work PCs handle it pretty well to begin with...

There are a couple of stability/performance fixes which become available on Windows update after SP1 is installed, so might be worth checking that everything is up to date after installing..

I've installed it on a couple of recent OptiPlex 780s at work and noticed no significant difference, but the true test will be when I stick it on my laptop & desktop at home - the laptop's an Inspiron 1501 which isn't officially supported with it but runs ok, and an Athlon X2-based desktop which is pretty creaky at this stage and has some issues with recognising a PCI SATA card.

My Dell inspiron 1525 seems to be running slower since installing SP1. Not impressed.

I've just finished installing it on a couple of Windows 7 Desktop PC's, a laptop, a Windows 2008 R2 server and a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper V Server Core install and tbh can't see any difference, but didn't really expect to.

For those downloading the service pack directly from M$ if you download the 2GB iso file when you burn it to DVD you end up with the individual x86 and amd64 files + an installer to work out which one you need and you get the ia64 version.

I remember reading that Service Pack 1 resets a lot of caching and Superfetch utilities. In a day or two Windows will work out which programs to cache and when. :)

I just ran ccleaner there now and it seems quite a bit faster! :)

Anyone else notice a weird opening and closing effect when you minimize windows or your browser, it's like a slow opening/closing effect?

Now you come to mention it, but if you asked the question before I installed SP1 theres a chance I'd have also noticed it ;) as I've never lookled that hard at the way it looks before. Might just be a slightly enhanced/changed aero feature? The Windows minimise just as quick but maybe you can sort of see them for longer if you know what I mean. Will check it later on an a non SP1 system.

Just installed SP1 earlier. Had a bit of a problem afterwards though, had a black screen with only the cursor showing after login. Couldn't do anything except knock off with the power button.
Turns out there was some problem with ZoneAlarm with it (version 9.1 or something), turned off that service and went back to normal. Just a heads-up if anyone has the same problem :)

    thats always been there.

Boring Service Pack as marked by a few blog posts. Such an insignificant pack that microsoft didnt bother to really document the update. Its essentially an amalgamation of a year and a half worth of patches, and not much else.

I had to reboot twice, back to normal now. My laptop was going so slow after the update it looked like the windows had a slow fading effect

I've put it on the netbook, no problems (N270).

It won't install on the main Laptop as it has a GRUB boot loader partition. I may have to hide some partitions to get it to load, someday, but for now I can't get too worried about it.

A couple of problems with SP1.
Firstly, the USB drivers became corrupt/missing. And the task bar is stuck on classic, i can't revert to Aero. Display driver is up to date.

You can enable Aero through the control panels. I re-installed Windows yesterday on a different laptop and aero wasn't enabled even though the correct drivers were installed. I ran that Windows Experience Index thing and it kicked aero back on again.

I've enabled aero/transparency, even putting visual effects to max doesn't fix it.

Did you try running the Aero Troubleshooter? Click on the Start orb, type 'troubleshooting' into the search box and press enter. Then click on 'Display Aero desktop effects'. Follow the instructions and see if that fixes your problem. :)

    Yes, it doesn't fix it.

It's telling me the theme doesn't support aero when it does and that DWM is disabled when it's running! I've changed the theme and restarted dwm but no change

Re-installed SP1 and everything seems to be ok now.
