    Hi,

I need to get my home re-insulated soon. I have got cavity blocks in my house, so I have two options
    • External Insulation
    • Injecttion foam into the blocks
I am just wondering if anyone has had either of these done, and do you have any feedback?

And also, if anyone knows the benefits of getting one over the other?

    Thanks!

If you have a single layer of cavity block your options are narrower than you think - Dry lining will work but interstitial condensation is a real risk.

There is no effective way to insulate the actual cavity in cavity blocks.

EWI - external insulation is really the only option for the many "single skin" houses in Ireland. Initial investment is high but you can hit almost any insulation specification you want.

Agreed, dont even consider pumping cavity blocks, but definitely pump an open cavity if you are going to then insulate with EWI.

The grant for EWI is 4000 euro, and for cavity pumping 400 euro. There is no grant for pumping cavity blocks because it doesnt work.

If you go for the 400 euro grant for pumping the cavity, you then cant get the 4000 euro grant for EWI.

Prices? Around 7 times more for EWI vs cavity pumping but definitely worth the price if you can afford it. If you allow 100 euro per m2 for EWI and subtract 4000 euro grant it will give an idea of price.

I pumped my bungalows cavity wall, and saw a bit of a benefit, mainly less wind blowing around the house. Then insulated with 150mm EWI and this brought the house straight from cold to warm.
