    When was the last time we had a general election which was guaranteed to result in a new Taoiseach? i.e. in which the sitting Taoiseach was not standing?

    (I don't know the answer by the way, would be interested to find out...)

    Never,I think is the answer.

    Many taoisigh resigned in office (e.g. Bertie).
    Bertie took over from Reynolds after the collapse of the Labour FF coalition.
