In life, do you think it all depends of what side of the coin/fence you're on?

Its something I guess I have been thinking / noticing the last while in my own life. I guess i am making this post after reading the thread in After Hours about 'FG looking to cut 18,000 or so Public Sector workers' ... the thread was met by alot of people who would rather see a percentage on the dole. Begrudary in my opinion. Because if they themselves were in the Public sector or had a family member in it would they be singing the same tune? (for the record i'm on the dole :P my opinion is not biast towards the public sector)

but as i say, that got me thinking to 'what side of the coin' mentality. So whats your thoughts? Do you think your average person has the 'side of the coin' mentality? ...

    Yes.

    No.

    Perhaps.

Well your perspective is bound to be shaped by your circumstances, but I don't think that's any excuse for not putting yourself in others' shoes. For instance, all the vitriol directed towards those on the dole, even those who are on it through no fault of their own - the way some people refuse to acknowledge that they would be in the same boat if they were laid off (and at the moment, it could happen) is baffling...

I do. But as Dudess has aptly pointed out - that shouldn't blinker our perspective either. What Ireland REALLY needs now is an ability to understand who the real victims are in our society and to support them. We haven't done very well in this regard so far.

I don't believe in that born on the wrong side of the tracks business. Not in this country at least, with how good our education system is, given it's mostly free, everyone has a good shot at being successful in a workplace enviroment if they have the drive to be.

I also think everyone when born here has the ability to lead a very happy life, not that everyone could be a billionaire, but if they wanted to travel the world, it's not "that" hard to do as a backpacker.

The only way wrong side of the tracks comes in is because people don't believe they can do it so they don't even try. I blame yoda, little sh1t saying "do or do not, there is no try" what an ass! :P

But yeah, I believe while everyone may not be born into a life of wealth, we are the masters of our own destiny, but slaves to our ambition.

It must be hard if you were born in certain disadvantaged areas with parents that just didn't know any better though. Many do get out but to me, some just never get a chance.

I think because the majority haven't experienced those conditions, some just don't have the social intelligence to empathise with that. Or maybe I'm just a leftie liberal!

I'm currently sitting in a Tesol course classroom in Cebu watching a guy teach three 14 year old Filipinos. I just taught them descriptive nouns a while ago.

You don't think it could have anything to do with acknowledging that the country can't afford to pay those 18,000 civil servants no?

I say this as someone with family and friends working in the civil service btw
