The dmax is just a rebadged chevrolet colorado and they aren't very durable.

Why do you need a 3.0 specifically? What about the Navara 2.5dci? I put nearly 100k on one without a single issue.

You get what ya pay for! Hilux will hold its value, has a sold fly wheel, D max has a dual mass so as a service item will not be cheap.
I have owned/driven all models of pick up and will allways recomend the Hilux.

are there any other jeeps/crew cabs post say 01 that are still using a solid fly wheel, i mean wtf where they thinking putting dual mass fly wheels into 4x4's. towing just shreds them.

We have a 2010 3.0 TD crew cab auto box, we changed from a 2008 Toyota Hilux, massive regret.

The D-Max is a prehistoric pig of a jeep(both on the road and off the road), its loud, slow and fairly troublesome. Plus its a pig on diesel and its also not a nice looking yoke, we mainly went for Isuzu because we had a trooper in the early 90s but its not a patch on it. Dont get me started on the auto box, imagine a 3 speed american rental kia and you'll get the idea of the performance of the isuzu box.

Save your money and buy a Hilux, even if you have to get a year older, you wont regret it.

I have an 05 Dmax. Bought it a year old with 7k miles. On the second day it felt like the clutch was slipping. Went back to the dealer and they said it was gone. They didnt hang about, took it the following day and replaced it. They said it was a faulty pressure plate. I was thinking, ****, whats next, should have kept the patrol. 5 years later and 70k miles it never gave an ounce of trouble. It was even better when i got rid of the 20 inch cobra wheels. Not great on the motor way cos its low geared. It revs high (3000rpm) at 70mph. 0-60=poor. 50-80=not bad. Economy is excellent.450-500 miles per tank (62 litres) works out @36MPG thats driving handy. The best i got was 530 miles on a long run. Dont get automatic. I know 2 lads that could only get 250-300miles per tankfrom the auto. Not a nice box. Cloth seats=crap. Get leather. Interior is cheap and plasticey. As for towing i dont do much but seen one pulling a mitsubishi canter which had a plant trailer with a 3 ton mini digger up a steep hill. It must have been in low transfer. About 5 ton. Rated for 3. If i was going for another crewcab i would probably treat myself to a hilux.:D And then a divorce. i think ill go another 70k in the dmax. Hope that helps with your decision Mr Brown.

is there not talk of crew cabs being taxed at full rate ie. not commercial as they are being abused ie not being used to bring workers (crew ) to building site etc rather than to mass , school etc revenue are looking for form with number on it proving that you have a commercial use for it and guards are asked to stamp that form at tax renewal time

thanks for all the advice drove 07 dmax found it ok not as much poke as cruiser probably cos its lower geared . drove hilux 3.0 08 last week and still thought my 02 cruiser had more power . it might be the set up leaf springs and all .hilux would have better resale value but when any of them get to eight or nine years does it matter . hilux more expensive .any of them would sit outside my door three quaters of the as i dont do much road about 6 or 7k a year ! dont know which to go for , thanks again for replies

All the councils are clamping down on this bit all right. They all have different rules. But wicklow has to be the best. You need a VAT number. A tax clearance cert. And a declaration form signed in the garda station to say you wont carry passengers who are not employed by you and that you wont drive it unless your working. That all jeeps, even an 1989 trooper. Thanks to the green party. Its not being enforced by the garda cos they drive them too.

A few things, the Isuzu Dmax dual mass flywheel isnt giving any trouble whatsoever as far as I can see and the Dmax is on Irish roads since 2004,the fella who suggested this hilariously recommended the Nissan Navara at the end of his post, the dmf has gone on every second one at a repair cost of €1500.The Dmax is giving almost no trouble at all outside of an odd starter motor and a few simple things,im dealing with these machines every day at a main Isuzu dealers, the newer engine version(from mid 2007 on) is a much quieter vehicle with more torque in most gears,it has cruise control as standard and is probably the one to go for in second hand.

OP should seriously consider buying a new one, pick up a driving 3 litre Trooper somewhere for around €13-1500 and you will buy a new Dmax with cruise, air con, remote locking, electric windows and mirrors and most importantly 3 Years Warranty for around €22000 with a hitch and plastic insert under the scrappage scheme, thats decent value considering an 08 Hilux/Navara will cost 20k.

Has anyone got experience of using the d-max for towing heavy weights?

Is the 3 ton a guide or a legal limit?
Can they tow up to the 5800kg/3500kg limits or is 3000kg the most you can legally tow?

I have been looking for a 07 Hilux as it seems obvious that they're the best thing to put in front of a cattle trailer if you want more than 2 seats. The only reason I'm looking at 07 is that 3L Irish ones seem scarce or non existent before that.

However, I am wondering are they worth the premium.

I am wary of the Navara and Ranger from plenty of credible reports. I know they're fine until it comes to heavy towing, then a different story. Not keen on the l200 either although haven’t heard much about it but our Pajero has let us down a few times.

To date I hadn’t heard much about the D-max. But good reports on ISUZU Lorries and of course the old Trooper.

THE LINK WALSH - having read your post I took a 06 for a test drive recently and was happy enough all round. New not justified and late 07 I haven’t seen too many available so its probably going to be pre revamp that I'm talking about – are they low on power for towing? (Seemed ok unladen)

I'm not worried about the frills but just need a reliable workhorse. I obviously couldn’t put a load on the back to test drive so I suppose that’s my question are they up to frequently towing large (moving) weights in terms of i) reliability and ii) power?

On paper they seem down on torque and BHP is it so in practice?
