Anyone have any recommendations? Do they make everyone break out at first? Do people use another cleanser or a toner or bother with moisturising your skin afterwords?
I have (extremely) dry skin but get spots!

My skins is extremely dry, I wear a night cream most days and drink 8+ glasses of water and eat oily fish and seeds regularly, yes I'm sure my skin is dry. It's been this way since I was a child.

Its just that if you're getting spots, it would be an excess of oil production, its what congests your skin.

I'd recommend you use an exfoliator twice a week to remove the flaky skin (it may be blocking your pores, causing the spots) and cleanse and tone twice daily. Also invest in a moisturiser that is suitable for your skin.

I'm interested in oil cleansers, thanks anyway. I've tried cleansing milks and toners and I exfoliate twice a week already. I wear long wearing makeup for work and I can't find anything that will take off my makeup but not be harsh on my skin, and it's putting my skin in terrible condition.

If anyone has experience with oil cleansers I'd love to hear how you got on!

I've had the Shu Uemura for a long time and find it really great, but I still have some congestion in the chin. I may need the stronger one - I have high performance at the moment, I've previously used AI and it really did help but once the issues were resolved it became too heavy, I probably need to switch between them. AO might suit you better if you are dry. There's nothing like it for taking off makeup tho. Nothing.

I've also used Eve Lom and it does do a good job but tbh the cost is too much for me, if it did a perfect job I'd buy (was a gift) but it's not perfect.

Have also used Origins oil but it's not great for eye makeup.

I'm currently using La Roche Posay Effeclar (a gel wash) and since I've started my hormonal acne has improved hugely and congestion is a bit better.

I have more combination skin but it leans oily in the t-zone rather than dry.

Oh thanks, on their website now investigating!

I was debating the origins one, shu uemura looks goood though
Do you tone and moisturise like normal with oil cleansers?

The origins one is good but I do recall a problem shifting eyeliner - maybe it stung my eyes? I'm not 100% sure it is a while ago. Certainly origins are good for samples if you can pop in, they may give you a couple of days worth in a sample bottle so you can try it out - I'd recommend Clerys rather than Arnotts in DCC. The Shu Uemura is far from cheap and I don't know if they have an Irish stockist.

Also MAC do one - I have not used it but have seen good reviews

I'm not much for toning, but yep, same as regular cleansers, I find I use a little less moisturiser tho. The odd time I need to doublecleanse, if I have shedloads of slap on, and occasionally will use a muslin cloth to remove for extra exfoliation.

Samples, that completely slipped my mind! I'll try that and see how it goes!

I very sceptical of MAC skincare products, sure I'll go research it anyway!!

Might be able to get it through a salon, will def be able to get it on the net somewhere!!

You should use a seperate cleanser for your eye area as its so delicate.

The only oil cleansers i've used were shu umera and dior. I think i thought they were both equally good but i tend to be in a hurry all the time and i got annoyed with having to wash my face so thoroughly before i applied skincare. I ended up using dior cleanser water which suits me really well as it takes off all my make up and my skin feels ready for skincare immediately afterwards. I think the dior one was about 30 euro, can't remember how much shu umera was. A friend used the eve lom one and thought it was good but i think she told me it was about 80 euro!!!!

Dermalogica Precleanse is great. I have very dry skin too and this doesn't dry it out at all.

Oh tempting me with Dior, I'm a sucker for them, I think I'll try get a sample of a Origins or Dior and start from there, I'm sure I'll end up buying shu uemera at some stage!!
    I couldn't spend 80e on a cleanser, it's a step too far I think!

I think I would have similar skin type to you-quite dry but I am quite prone to spots. I started using Burt's Bees cleansers abput 2 years ago though and it has seriously improves. They had a lemon & poppy seed one which was fantastic but seems to have disappeared. I then started using their orange essence cleanser which isn't technically for that skin type, but its not at all drying, lotsa good oils in it and my skin has stayed clear, hurrah!

I also found toning makes a big difference. I use kiehls ultra facial toner, and the matching moisturiser. They're great for giving out sample sachets if ya wanted to try those!

I have heard from friends that the dermalogica range is great too, but wouldn't know which would be for dry skin etc.

lol! Yeah i love dior as well, never been as much of a sucker for any other brand but their stuff is gorge. The only thing i find is that they can be pretty difficult to get samples from. I go to one girl all the time for my stuff and she looks after me well with makeovers and extra treats and samples of some stuff i might like. I can pm you her name if you want?

Where do you get the shu umera one now? The place i got it before doesn't do it anymore. I think i remember it being about 60 euro though? Is that right???? I'm a bit surprised that i would have spent that much on a cleanser! lol

Although i am in love with the dior cleansing water!

I find Eve Lom the best - but have run out of the big jar I had for the last couple of years.

They used to have a stall in Harvey Nick's in Dundrum where there was a deal - you got a profound facial for €120, but afterwards you also got €120 worth of Eve Lom products (as far as I remember - maybe the facial was €150 then €120 worth of products). Anyone know if this deal is still on? *Very* well worth it when I had it.

WOW, that's a little out of my price range! I got an oil cleanser from boots in the end for like 15e, like it so far, might splash out on a more expensive one if it continues to go well and doesn't give me spots ect (it has brought up some, but no new ones yet!!)!!

You should try using extra virgin olive oil. Place warm face cloth over your pores to open them. Rub in the oil, scrub with ground up very fine sugar, exfoliate your face, I promise it will feel gorgeous. Costs about 3.99 for large bottle in Lidl or Aldi. It all I use on my skin, if I cant pronounce it, it dosent go on my face. :)
Ive always had dry skin, but this keeps it from drying out.
Great for the rest of yyour body too :)

Remember oil fights oil better than anything else. Full of antioxidants.

Just give it a try, see how you like it, you'll be very suprised.
    Good luck.

I dug out my bottle of the shu uemura oil cleanser recently as my dior one had run out and will need to wait for payday before i repurchase.

Anyhow i thought i'd re post because after using this for two days i would definitely not buy this again. The main reason is because its too much hassle and for the price it does the exact same as the dior one.

The way you are supposed to apply it is use four pumps and smother your face in it, apply a few drops of warm water and massage all together, rinse in warm water after 4-5 mins, cotton off excess. So cleansing takes about 10 mins, plus 4 pumps per usage means the bottle will be gone a lot quicker then you expect. I cleanse twice a day and seeing how much product is gone after one use makes me wonder if this big bottle would even last two months. With the applpication method its really messy too and its impossible to get off with a couple of rinses.

It definitely works well though, so if the price, the effort to purchase, and the long application method doesn't put you off you will end up with a good product in this, but for me the dior one is just as good, less messy, cheaper and easier to get so i will stick with that. Maybe i'll try the origins one next time i buy though to compare

Are you referring to the Shu Uemura slowmoe?

I generally find two pumps is plenty. In all the times I've purchased it no-one has ever mentioned tissueing off excess, I haven't seen that before, and I've never had a problem emulsifying or rinsing clean, or left any makeup residue behind. I'll use a third pump only if I have a lot of dark eye-makeup and liner.

(I do use a different cleanser in the morning tho, I don't have time for that faffing about in the morning so I use a foaming gel.)

Yes the shu uemura one, i have the high perfeormance one. I have foudn that if i only use two pumps of it when it comes to toning there is still a fair amount of dirt coming off the cotton pads, if i use the full 3 or 4 my skin is usually clean by toning time. I was told at purchase that you need the extra pumps and the massage with water to push it into the skin more, if you just lash it on its only on the surface of the skin. Where do you buy yours lainey? I got mine in london. I agree it a pain in the morning, too much work for me unfortunately

maye i'm wearing more make up than you though! i use a long wear foundation

I usually wear Revlon Colorstay so it's fairly heavy duty... the massage with water is key to the whole process, but I find once I've emulsified properly then it rinses off cleanly. I wonder are you not using enough water to emulsify, and if you're leaving too much actual oil on the skin? It all has to turn milky.

So - 2 pumps, apply to whole face, wet my hands and a little extra water and massage, then rinse thoroughly. There should be no oil remaining, it should all wash off, if you still have oil that you need to tissue off you're using too much oil or not enough water at the massage step so it's not emulsifying. I think.

I have got it in Shu stores in San Francisco & London, and Harvey Nicks in Edinburgh and maybe Bloomingdales in NYC? Not sure about that last one! Could have been Saks... it's a while ago. Have had 2 big bottles and 3 little ones.

ETA - the number of pumps might be related to skin type, if you have oilier skin then maybe you need more? i can accept 3 but 4 seems a massive massive quantity of oil.

It goes into milky streaks but not milky all over the place, i will give it a shot your way with two pumps tonight and see how it goes. I still think its way too much effort ut if it works i will probably keep it as my once a week deep cleanse and go back to my dior cleansing water, just because its so easy to use!

    Thanks for tips

Hope it works for you - maybe try 2.5 pumps if you've previously found 2 didn't leave you clean!

I recently bought the Nip + Fab oil cleanser in boots. I have sensitive combination skin and this removes my make up and doesn't sting my eyes at all. Its not too expensive either so worth a shot. I use it with a muslin cloth - you can get them for a few euro in tesco.

If I have a lot of eye make up on I use a product called 'balms away' by the Balm its a bit like vaseline you rub it into your eye area then wash off its brilliant for getting heavy eye make up off and won't dry your skin - its dear but a pot goes a very long way I've had mine months - its on offer on brandalley.com at the moment I picked one up for eight euro on Wednesday

One product I recently found fab for dry skin is the eucerin Q10 night cream. I use dermalogica skin smoothing during the day and tried the intensive moisture one for night but it was too thick and gave me spots - the eucerin one is about 16 euro and is just right.
