Folks, a friend's pc has been packed away for the past 2 yrs. When he booted it up the system gives a message to insert windows disk. The pc is a HP. I used a Dell recovery disk on it this evening. Everything went well until the "Windows is starting" comes up. After a few second up comes a blue screen saying "Windows has to close down......." At the bottom it list this :

    STOP: 0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X8080A27E, 0XF7ECA754, 0X00000000)

Can anyone please throw some light on this problem.

The dell recovery disk wont work on the HP, or even on any other dell most likely, as the copy of windows on the disk will be for the pc it came with. If you need a disk you will probably need to get onto HP with the serial number of the oc in question.

I had the same thing with a notebook last year belong to someone else who had no disks. Fujitsu siemens it was, and i got the recovery disks for it as above.

How old is the PC, the last few years they come with the recovery system on a hidden partition on the hard drive and it can be activated as the PC is started up by pressing certain function buttons to get into the recovery menus. What model is it HP......?

What error did it have before you tried recovery..

It just went to the black "Dos" screen and asked for a disk to be inserted, iirc.
The pc is a 2003 model. It was then a top of the range model. Wireless keyboard. Pentium 4 , 512mb ram, 120gb hdd. The damn thing cost €2k back then:eek:

RE the Dell recovery disk. It has already rebooted 2 non-Dell lappies, so I assumed it would work. It installs all the various drivers, just does not boot.

The dell disk your using must be a few years old if thats working. I tried it a few times and only about 10 years ago or so did that work. More recently a retail windows disk and the affected pc`s product key were needed, or one for the actual pc (oem disk)ordered from the manufacturer were needed.

Thanks for that, Robbie. Will have another look at it tomorrow night. There was some info coming up about the partitions and to press C to have a look. But when you hit C nowt happens. I'll go into it further and update.

You could try your dell disk again and look out for an option to format the main c drive when going through the setup process. Its a few years since i did a restore with xp, so the memory of it is faded a bit.

Had another go this evening.Tried the Dell disk with the same results. Then tried a Targa disk. It went into Dos and gave me a "memory overflow" error. In the end I tried hitting F10 on turning it on in an effort to get it to go to the built in recovery that is in XP. That effort gave me an error "Insert reboot media and hit any key". So in the end we have decided that he will ring HP in the morning to try & source a HP recovery disk. Thanks to Jonathan & Robbie for your help.

I've a feeling this case is not closed yet:)
