No idea on the Toyota but I have heard stories of the 1.9 tdi engine reaching 600,000 miles in Taxi's when looked after

The nine year rule is overturned, buy the cheapest car you cant afford.

I'd go for the Toyota, but don't be surprised if it does not live up to the 'best built cars in the world' tagline.

They're not really that reliable, and the D4D engines can give trouble (though as common rail diesels go, they're one of the more reliable).

It's not really fair to compare these cars; the Octavia is a competitor for the Auris/Golf/Corolla etc whereas the Avensis competes with the Skoda Superb.

Despite the fact that the Toyota is more likely to give trouble, it will still be reliable for the most part and it will be a nicer car to drive (the ridiculously light steering and lightness of the controls makes them a great car to drive around town) being bigger and a lot more comfortable.

Octavias are not as nice inside and are noisier.

Edit: just seen you're looking at a 2.2 D-4D Avensis, while normally I'm very keen to enthuse about the benefits of larger and more powerful engines, I'd steer clear of these, they can give a whole heap of problems.

The smaller 2.0 D-4D is by far and away the more reliable of the Avensis diesel engines and with 126 bhp will still have plenty of go, especially for taxi work.

T4 means UK high spec, nearly highest, make sure you do a HPI check on it to verify mileage. Servicing and parts will be cheaper in the Avensis, however the Octavia has better mpg which in a Taxi is where you make most money. From a driving point of view the Avensis is likely to have more gadgets and driver aids than the Octavia as it's better spec. If you intend to be carrying a lot of luggage the Octavia is the better car in this regard. Given the 9 year rule that came and went it's possible similar will come in again, if they do having a car one year newer will last you one year longer. Both being in good nick should do 200k miles easily and beyond if looked after.

The Octavia has an old fashioned diesel, so is less likely to go wrong. Avensi can give trouble with the injectors, especially the 2.2 D-4Ds.

I'd still take the chance on the Toyota simply becuase I like my comforts too much:)!

If the OP could find an automatic Skoda Superb then he/she would have the perfect car for taxiing, and that is leagues ahead of the Toyota.

Early DSG boxes are far from bomb proof too. They also cost alot to put right.

I wouldn't be too worried about a 150hp 2.2, and I'd have it over an octavia any day. T4 will be fully loaded too. Check uk history before buying.

Always thought the Liftback Octys were very small in the back seats.

    Very strange advice.

The older ones were tight alright, the mk2 is a lot bigger.

I can understand people not liking octavias on here but why in the name of god would you suggest a car that is going to be unreliable and uneconomical when it is going to be used for his livelyhood ??
