00 Escort Van Gearbox problem

Hi I have a 00 escort van which refused to go into gear. the gearstick moves as normal but no gears are selected.

I have removed the linkage from the gearstick to where it connects to the gearbox, there is a little movement in the rod coming form the box but it doesnt appear to be engaging in anything. Before it went completely it was difficult to select gears for a week or so.

Has anyone encountered these sympthoms before.

Is it replacement gearbox time or is there some connections that could be replaced/reconnected with the box removed.

    Thanks

I took the box out today and the selector is not working. I have already ordered a replacement from Traynors which is coming friday.

Thanks for the offer all the same.

Dismantled the old box today for the crack found the pin that the selector connects to snapped in half, explains why it wouldn't go into gear I guess. :)

Replacemment box arriving in the morning , will fit it saturday, has anyone any tips on getting the rear mount back on , it was a bit of a biatch to get out to say the least?

The gearbox arrived this morning but is has some slight differences to the one that came out.

The gear selector looks to be a thinner diameter and it has a nuckle on the gearbox sidebox on the one that came out the knuckele is on the link from the gear stick.

There is also some form of electrical connection on the bracket that anchors the clutch cable, this was not on the originaL.

I didn't have the time to check splines, speedo connector etc yet.

I'm assuming this box is from an older van , does anyone know if it will fit and work properly or should I get it changed. The electrical connector on top is a concern as I haven't a clue what its for and can't find any diagrams on the net to tell me.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I'd say that extra electrical connector is your speedo sensor. Ford replaced the older mechanical cable drive in favour of an electrical sensor some time towards the end of '90's. Can you compare the numbers on the new gearbox casing with that of the one you removed? On the face of it, I'd say the two gearboxes might not be interchangeable

That sounds very like a gearbox from a petrol escort instead of a diesel.

The petrol models had a sensor connection at the speedo cable fitting. The diesel models didn't.

The later diesels in the UK did, as they had a digital odometer instead of the mechanical one associated with the cable. I'd say Traynors sold the OP a diesel box alright, but I say it's from a newer release of the Escort.

The box they sent me was from a turbo dieslel , mine is not the turbo model.

Got it replaced with the right one yesterday and fitted it today so she's back on the road now.

Thanks to everyone who offered their help and advice.
