Macro...without Macro lens/ring

Just wondering if I could get decent macro results with and Nikkor 18-200 lens.

Looking to play around with your standard flower type shot on a tripod so nothing extreme.
I also have the 35mm 1.8 which has closer focusing and shallower DOF.

I recall Scott Kelby suggesting that zooms could be used for marco (a poor mans macro I'm sure).

Interested on any advise on this or limitations of these lenses.

    Cheers
    Willy

I don't think zooms work very well, but get some cheap macro extension tubes. You can get non CPU ones on eBay for about a tenner. You need a lens with an aperture ring though. Don't think you're 35mm has? That would work much better than the zoom. If not, pick up a cheap old 50mm prime. You're looking at about €100 altogether if you buy used. Much cheaper than a macro lens.
